Not sure if this needs it's own section but I know lots of people love orchids & if I remember correctly Bess & her husband have a collection. I have 4 phalenopsis orchids of which the first was a birthday present & the other 3 were 'rescue' reduced plants costing 50p, £1.50 & £2.80 (including pretty white pot) from various places. This is the £2.80 one from M&S, currently in the kitchen window, I'm not very good with house plants but take Alan Titchmarsh's advice in that if the roots on the orchid are white it needs watering & if they're green it's O.K. & I feed them when they're flowering with a few drops of liquid orchid food every so often when I remember.

My orchid was given to me in June when I moved in here and has just finished flowering. I treat it as if it’s on Magnetic Island. This means torrential cyclonic rain sometimes and quite dry other times. My orchids were grown on a Frangipani tree, so were in hot shade.

Here is one of my Native Orchids. "Andrew Pearson" It was collected in the wild when it was permitted. I have had it for about 30 years now. I lives on that brick wall in our driveway and gets no special treatment other than plenty of "Snail Food" as the buds form. I gets all the weather the very odd frost to the summer 30c++ Its perfume is extremely sweet and strong. A close up of the flower.

That is beautiful@keith. What a good size it has grown to. The best orchid show I have been to was in Townsville. A friend in Ingham propagates orchids and he has a laboratory with medical equipment to do this. He is a cane farmer, but this is his hobby. I have never seen such an interesting and beautiful place, but the Ingham mosquitoes are savage. The minute we stepped out of the car, we were handed mosquito repellant, which sits on a table outside. That is where we went for the avocados and intend going back there after Easter.

Ladybird
That was a native of heavy bush land in NSW and during the winter they can get snow. They can survive cold winters but over watering in the hotter weather can kill them.

Wow! That makes it a possibility in the milder areas of UK!

Our phalaenopsis growing on the Window ledge. All store bought a few have been there more than three years and regularly flower with no special treatment other than a little water when the pot is dry. Keith

Although this thread is old now I thought I would chip in as well & perhaps we will find more people with interest in Orchids posting here! I have a few Orchids, the supermarket ones, Phalaenopsis, on the windowsill of the small window over our kitchen sink. One of them has lived there for 4 years & has reflowered every year for the last 3 years! A 2nd one I think has flowered twice with me while the 3rd I don't remember if it has flowered for a 2nd time with me - yet! At the present time I have 2 plants that have scapes that are quite advanced. In a couple of months I hope to see them open their flowers. When they open I move them into our living room so we can enjoy them for a few weeks. After flowering they go back into the kitchen window till the next time. .

They look healthy and very professional balc2 , Thank you, Cherry! I'm rather surprised they keep on growing to be honest, let alone flowering!
.
.
. I have a third one with the bud still tucked in the base of the leaves. I wasn't able to get a picture of it though. But it has flowered 3 times before so this year will be its 4th year flowering & its third time with me! I must be doing something right!

I've taken a few photos of the Orchids in the small kitchen window from outside. They are not very good as there is nearly always a lot of reflection & therefore it's hard to get decent shots.

Next week I should be able to post a photo of the first flower to open this year on my Orchids! I'll probably move it on to the living room table on Monday.

As promised here is the Orchid that has started to flower. . . . This is it's 2nd year with me so strictly speaking it's the first time it has bloomed for me. I was given it as a birthday present last year so it was in flower at that time.
I have 2 more in the kitchen window that will flower in the coming months as well. One has flowered 3 or 4 times with me so far!
