This post contains two questions actually. Under the Solomon's Seal I have a lot of the small grey sawflies. They are sitting on the ground because they have stripped the plants. Should I get rid of them? Will they die off or breed or what? I have never had these before.
I am a little suspicious about the niches taken out of some of the leaves on Daphne bholua Jacqueline Postill. Could I have vine weevil in the soil? I don't know how I would have got this if I have. Is this common in the open garden. This is the shade garden which is full of primulas, daphnes, ferns, etc., and the soil is richer than a pot plant.

I get the sawfly larvae demolish my Solomons seal every year, the birds get a lot of them but not enough. The larvae will go into the soil where they overwinter and pupate in the following spring. Your plants will survive, they do say you may get reduced growth in the following year but I've not had that problem. I don't know about vine weevil.

I get sawfly larvae on my Solomon's Seal too Cherry, and as WF has said it doesn't affect the following year's growth. You could spray with Provado to kill them, but as the birds don't eat the larvae in my garden, I cut the tops off the plant once its infested and dispose of them in the council recycle bin, in the faint hope that might prevent an infestation next year. It is possible to get vine weevil in your garden soil, I lost several sedums last year and when I dug them out found vine weevils. I watered the soil with Provado Vine Weevil mixture and I haven't seen any in that area this year.

I was able to pick up the sawfly with two hand trowels and put them away on the big heap. Thanks Esther.

My Daphne Bholua 'Jacqueline Postill' has crescents cut out of the edge of the leaves as I would expect from Vine Weevil. Will I treat the ground around it because I would not think the grubs are about? Do I use this Provado on the leaves. It is quite a tall plant now. The nicks are out in my primulas in cell trays too, but the roots are fine. Should I treat these with Provado Vine Weevil Killer too?

I have pushed this further up the posts in the hope that now that Christmas is over, you will all turn your thoughts and expertise to my vine weevil problem if there is a problem.

now that my internet connection is back after being down over Xmas i can post but unfortunately Cherry, I can't help with this as I've never had vine weevil but have some Provado should they ever arrive. If you think about it, vine weevils were around before there were ever any garden pots or gardens either come to think of it so they must have lived their life cycle outdoors.

Cherry I had a look on a couple of websites and they seem to be saying that the beetles don't themselves do much harm to the plants, just nibble the leaves, which won't kill the plant. The grubs do all the damage to the roots. So there is no point in putting the Provado on the leaves, they recommend drenching the pots with Provado if you see any signs of the grubs. In my experience the grubs seem to appear when the weather gets warmer so I would just keep a watch and then use the Provado if you see any grubs. The RHS website doesn't recommend using Provado on plants in the ground because it is not effective.

Thankyou Peony. You have been a great help. It is as I thought, but you have expanded on my scant information. I will just leave it for now until I see evidence of the grubs in warmer weather.

I did cuttings of the Philadelphus coronaries 'aurea' and that some night the leaves had huge niches cut out of them and these leaves were cut in half to lessen the transpiration. I just threw them out, even though they did not suffer in any other way and I put more in. The same thing happened in a morning. I thought vine weevils came out at night. I am just going to leave these to see what happens. The potting compost is fresh so I can't see where they must be coming from. My other cuttings are fine.

They are experts at hiding Cherry, maybe have a search under all your pots and on your bench.

Where are the cuttings kept Cherry, it could be leaf cutter bees.
