I've been up to Sunderland to spend time with my brothers. The weather was a bit duff but I got up at 7.15 to catch the sunrise on Saturday. It was a bit cloudy mind and cold but I had a wonderful time. Couldn't actually see the sun but the clouds were great. looking straight out to sea. looking right to a collection of Cannon Ball limestone rocks, that my daughter studied as part of her conservation degree. This part of the beach was my regular playground. You might be able to spot Roker pier in the distance. looking right this 3 mile stretch of sandy beach leads to more rocks at the village of Whitburn, know as Whitburn Steel. We used to walk the dog along to Whitburn at least twice a week. and as a teenager I would be in the water if it was safe to swim.

Thanks for sharing some photos of the beach, seaburn, nice to visit places where you have memories of growing up! I've never seen the sea or a beach in the winter. For that matter very few times even during the summer!

My eldest brother still lives in the family home and it is 500yds from the beach, so most days until aged 18 when I left for uni, I was down there and often in the water no matter what time of year. I miss it so much. When my girls were younger we'd go up regularly and they know this beach better than our local beaches [40-50 min drive] of Bridlington and Hornsea.

Lived on the Promenade in Mid Wales and then in Minehead. Still totally detest sandy beaches. Comes from having spent my childhood on the beach and always and I mean always ending up with a scratched eyeball from getting sand in my eyes. In Somerset we used to go to the beach at Kilve which was rock pools and very little sand.

gritty sandwiches is the main 'distress' we had but I guess having good sand for sand castles and rock pools made it all worth while. my brother got smacked for throwing sand, so that had a big impression on me.

Gorgeous sunrise photo, lots of beaches are at their best in winter aren't they. 😊

Lovely to hear about people's experiences with beaches - even though I have none to share!

I will be having my son’s cocker spaniel for 6 weeks while he and my daughter-in-law visit their family in Australia (my grandchildren and great grandchildren}. The dog is a great grandson of my own from Southery. A dogwalker is going to walk him every day because I am not a good walker even though I can still manage the gardening. This will bring the family together, so I am having a sort of Christmas dinner while my son is here from Scotland. I will like having a dog again.

Enjoy Christmas with your son and your daughter's dog.
We are also going away for Christmas and the New Year. This will be our first year in the last 18 when we have not spent it with our daughter and gkids!
Except for the lockdown we have been with our gkids while they opened their Christmas presents. But this year we are spending Christmas and New Year with our only son and family who don't live here.
