Heather,my daughter, arrived yesterday evening for the weekend. I took some of the Sutton's cataloues to the hut this morning and put them on the counter for people to take. The weather was dry while I was there.Because Heather is here to look after Rosemary I was hoping for a full afternoon on the allotment. It started drizzling a bit this afternoon but it soon stopped and the sun came out so I decided to chance going. However, I only managed about 15 minutes weeding when it started raining a bit .I went and sat in the car hoping it would stop but it started raining harder.I sat there for at least half an hour then then gave it up and came home.

It has been dry today but it is pouring down this evening.Went on the allotment this afternoon and carried on with the weeding but I am only getting up the larger weeds. It would take me too long to get all the tiny weeds up so this will have to wait a bit.I wanted to get the larger ones up before they started seeding.I also staked and tied the sweet corn plants.

Surely the sweetcorn plants should be dying by now!

Hi Balc2.The sweet corn plants are still going because they were planted late as were most of my veg plants. I haven't had any off yet but I am hoping to do a basket of veg for our church harvest next weekend so I will put some in there. Forgot to mention yesterday that Heather, our daughter ,went home back to Porthmadog. She has done a good job by finishing weeding and tidying up my rockery. She did half of it last time she was here. It has rained all day today, hard at times,so I haven't been out.I posted my seed order to Dobies yesterday and this morning I got my Suttons order ready for posting. After that I spent most of the time carrying on with my writing of seasonal jobs for the National veg magazine for next year.It takes me a long time to do them, not only the writing but I have to sort pictures out to accompany the articles.I had done the January article before so I am up to February.I have to finish this and do the March one by early November.I can;t take pictures for February and March now,can I? so I have go through pictures that I have taken previously and find some that I haven't sent before.

Dry again today so I went on the allotment this morning .Rosemary's hairdresser usually comes Thursday mornings but she came this afternoon so I had an hour on the allotment while she was here. I couldn't leave Rosemary on her own any longer.I have done nothing except weeding.I have weeded in the frames where I had sown carrots because they were full of chickweed and then I started weeding the rest of the root crop bed where I had sown turnips.Did my best to weed between the carrots and turnips without disturbing them. When I got home this afternoon I started weeding the chrysanth beds again but there aren't many weeds .

You write a lot about weeding, don't you use mulch on your beds to help keep down the weeds? It would give you more time to get on with more pressings things than the constant weeding! Our local council gives away (or at least used to give away) the compost from the green bin collections here. When I was sharing an allotment with my friend Gerry from church we went to the place where they piled it up into mountains higher than us! You could help yourself to us much as you could take away &, as it was early spring, the mountains would be steaming & so hot if you dug inside they gave off steam! We used to use it as mulch to keep down the weeds on the plot, being as it was sterile. (This was 15 years ago!)
Do you have access to something similar? Perhaps your council charges for it as I've read in other places.

Hi Balc2 We have no such material round here.I do spread manure on my beds and my own made compost but I don't have enough for a layer thick enough to keep weeds down. The allotment committee have ordered me some weed membrane to put down this autumn and I am hoping this will solve the weed problem next year.

The weather didn't look promising this morning so I didn't risk going to the allotment.I carried on weeding the chrysanth beds but there are only small weeds. It did start raining a bit so I went in the greenhouse and potted 12 rooted dahlia cuttings into three and a half inch(9 cm.) pots. The rain wasn't much and didn't last long. It brightened up this afternoon so I went on the allotment and carried on weeding the root crop bed and didbudded a few dahlias.I could only stay till 4.00 PM and when I got home we had a real downpour. This evening I have rubbed some more labels.I write my labels in pencil then they rub out easily to be used again.
