I thought it was just me dc. First shoots were really quick to grow but since then things have slowed right down. Willo's Violet has continued growing quickly but then that they are rotting when cuttings are taken. Tis going to be another trying season methinks!!!

Also here in Holland things seem to take a bit longer then normal. Few tubers still dont show any sign of life and i think they wont anymore somehow but for the rest not to many black cuttings. Only a few of 185 cuttings taken till now from 49 varieties. Growing them in 5 pieces sharp sand and 1 piece special fine seeding compost. Also using some rooting powder to stimulate root growth. Watering them once after planting and them just leaving them at about 20 C. Taking maximum of 8 cuttings from every variety, cant place more. Wish i could send some to people who want some dutch ones...... But its just taking to long in the dark parcel i guess....

I have had the majority of my first batch of cuttings damp off. It has been mentioned previously about the compost, I too wonder about it now, after using the same method of taking cuttings over the last twenty years, not had losses like this.

last 5 years I have used jiffy pellets for my cuttings.Changed back to using multi purpose and sharp sand mix this year because I thought jiffys were getting to expensive.Had a bit of damping off so I have bought 50 pellets and the 50 cuttings I have taken tonight have been put into them to see how they get on.Propagator is now full, hopefully I will be potting some up this weekend.I am having the ususal problem of rooting minley carol they just won't root for me no matter how long I leave them in .

Just had a word with Sion at Station House to check if the "professionals" were having any problems. His are no different to normal, but his original thoughts were dampness/lack of light and fluctuations in temperature....all things they can control. He also said that prior to rooting, he sprays his plants with a fungicide, obviously a professional one. So for those having problems, maybe a systemic fungicidal spray might help?

Just taken another dozen dahlia cuttings. Six 'Lilian Marston', three 'Hillcrest Candy' and three 'Ryecroft Laura'. I intended taken them this morning but had not filled the pots and put in propagator to warm the compost yesterday so had to wait for them to warm up today.
These cuttings are smaller than usually recommended so I hope they will be okay. They have been dipped in Clonex Rooting Hormone and sprayed with Rhizotonic, then inserted into two inch pots of the coco substrate and then this given a light spray with Rhizotonic also. Rooting medium is just moist and will be checked daily in case the humidity is too high.
Instead of putting these on heat mat or in heated propagator they are in a large clear storage box with a lid so I can move them into the greenhouse on good days and back into the spare room on cold ones (like today - only 4C and icy rain).
They have got two chances as we say around here!

I was going to sow the few dahlia seeds that I have today, they will have to wait now. I do not fancy going out to the greenhouse in the snow just to sow them.

Ordered some dahlias off sion last nite some weston pirate and some jomanda as it looks like I will struggle for the numbers I want of it .I grow it has a small and mini so I plant about 36.Supposed to be going to the northern commitee agm tomorrow at crooklands hotel near kendal dave gillam and david hall of halls of heddon are giving talks, but it looks like the weather (we have to cross the notorious A66) or this sickness bug that as swept through the family this week will win.
