I have said on "Derek's diary"about sorting my dahlias out and potting all that were ready into 5 inch pots.I have just over 200 altogether which is more than enough. However I have no small cactus/semi cactus varieties. I only got 3 cuttings from Debs Kiwi. Only one rooted and that is not up tp standard. So if any of you have any spare plants of these varieties I would be pleased if you could send me some and I will pay the postage. If you will please let me know I will give you my address. I am only interested in exhibition varieties

If only you'd said a couple of days ago....I gave a lot away on Saturday and some more are going today. However, I've just checked the propagator and it looks like 5 Oakwood Goldcrest have just rooted, and I have 5 each of Ryecroft Zoe and Ruskin Andrea that look quite reasonable.

I have struggled with small semi cactus this year, 3 oakwood goldcrest and 4 cherwell goldcrest is all i have been able to manage.Just wating for a 20 batch of ruskin myra still in the propagator, hoping they root to boost my numbers up on that variety.I am getting some oakwood off a mate of mine but it looks like I will have to wait another year to have a crack at the small semi cactus championship class at harrogate.I don't think I will get 5 cherwell of just 4 plants. After a struggle this year I think I have enough of each variety appart form the goldcrests although I have had to order some jomanda from station house.Hillcrest candy, eastwood moonlight and janal amy have been the best rooters for me this year.I took my last cuttings yesterday 20 marys jomanda which I may now grow as a small and a mini.Just out of interst I am going to work out how many cuttings of each variety were taken and how many of that variety rooted.

You are not on your own DC with Oakwood, I had what I thought 6 nice tubers and yet they only threw 8 cuttings. A far cry from last year when I was giving them away. Jomanda was another that didn't produce what I wanted, 18 rooted cuttings with 24 minimum needed. On the flip side, Trooper Dan, Marston George, Blyton Golden Girl and Hillcrest Duncan Edwards all produced way more than I wanted.

One that has impressed me so far is Ruskin Michelle, plenty of cuttings, roots easily and makes big plants in no time at all. Had to put the 1st stop into them 10 days ago as they were getting too big. All my other 1st double stop's done today.

I managed 16 Oakwood off 2 tubers. Though they were field tubers, not pot tubers. It really has been hit and miss with them all this year. The only good thing is that I haven't lost a single cutting, though the last batch I have in the propagotor are strugging with the heat of the last few days. Some varieties I've just got the 6 I need. I've potted all the plants now into 5 inch pots. Half are in the cold frame to slow them down a bit, rest still in the greenhouse to speed them up a bit. Have stopped Sir Alf and Ruskin Andrea. The latter I'll be double stopping and trying to get 12-16 blooms per plant to keep the size down. Though did I read that if they go oversize this year they won't be disqualified?

Had a phone call from Halls of Heddon, on Tuesday, some dahlia cuttings will arrive today. Three other varieties will arrive, when they arrive. They have not had a good season, for a variety of reasons.

My order was quite a few miniature decs plus one or two others and Mr Hall said that miniatures are proving more difficult than any others. Ah well!
