I had to go back down to the allotment yesterday evening. Frost was forecast for us, so all the dahlia's where placed back into the greenhouse again, just in case.

Set out 27 'Hillcrest Candy'. 19 to be grown as medium semi-cactus and the other 8 to try as a large semi-cactus.

My plants are getting a little tall at the moment - Can I stop them before planting them out? I am only growing Miniautures, Smalls and Mediums and trying to find out how many to grow up for the varities.
Many thanks.

Stopping now would give flowers to early for Sept shows, but would be ok if your show was at the beginning of Aug, at the end of the day you can still chop them to the number of pairs of leaves you want per variety no matter how many pairs they have at planting time. for Sept shows I stopped mine the last weekend of June and the first weekend of July.

I've planted out 70 min decs and a dozen Duncan Edwards this week. Might as well be in the ground as in the pots. Never had them as far on at this time of year before, the smaller plants will be going in next week. They are protected under the covers and have been outside a few weeks. The tuber of my seedling has produced over 60 plants, just have to wait and see what it looks like this year I may even leave the "covers" up, Can't decide. (They look more like a poly tunnel with the ends covered in plastic but the sides open for air flow)

Tel's right snute I have some brenda t that are tall with 8 pairs of leaves but I will be taking them back to 5 pairs anyway.I stop some varieties in there pots that need double stopping.I have already stopped dikara superb, hillcrest divine and willos violet so I can get enough breaks to keep the size down.

Going to make a start on planting the dahlia's out this morning. The largest dahlia bed still needs preparing, so I may have to use a couple of the veg beds if I need too. Birkenshaw Pudsey will be planted out at the correct distance from each other, fingers crossed for the seedling class at Harrogate. The rest of the varieties can be planted closer together seeing as they will be grown mainly for seeds.

Got more dahlias planted this morning, only another 60 to go!
When the rain started this afternoon I took the opportunity to pot one plant of each of my cultivars into 7.5 litre pots of Canna Coco Professional +. These will be kept in or around the greenhouse all summer for some super-size pot tubers come autumn.
I've tried a couple of cultivars like this - 'Hillcrest Candy' and 'Trelyn Kiwi' - over the last two seasons and both times the tubers have been the best keepers and throwers.
Need to get another bag of growing medium though as I didn't quite have enough.

Is there a rule of thumb for how many to grow up for the classifications, for example say 10-12 for miniatures, 8-10 for smalls etc etc and what to do if the plants are not big enough to stop. Some of mine are growing slowly and if I were to grow say 12 up I would need six pairs of leaves and some only have four.
