Started to put my canes around the plants today. Managed about an hour...too hot. Need watering twice a day now, especially the giants. Buds just starting to show on Sir Alf and Bryn Terfel. Need to secure them about 12th July to get them ready for 10th August. Going to be close. First one I will let flower is Ryecroft Rebel, being grown in a 30 litre polypot, and I will let one Senzoe flower. That will give me an early guide as to the state of potash in the soil.

Made the decision today to go through all the dahlias that only got a single stop and give them another, all except janal amy, eastwood moonlight, kiwi gloria, and gateshead festival.Thats charlie two, brenda t,ruskin michelle, joan walker, hillcrest candy, vals candy and marston lilac all got a second stop as they were all budding up and going to flower midd august with this weather, even though they were only stopped 3/4 weeks ago.Time will tell if I have made the right decision.

You could have left them and entered shrewsbury show If it's any consolation, I'm fighting hard to keep them back. Never known them grow so fast as they are this year. I'm even growing Sir alf on a side bud

Sprayed the ones with "smut" again today, lots more of them now. Saw a garden with lots of dahlias in with the same "smut" as mine so I don't feel too bad about mine. Must of been the conditions from 11 June - 4 July. Then spent the rest of the day pulling plants out that have virus. About 30% of them. Must of been a tuba and its in all varieties. Must of been spread by the large numbers of thrips and capsid bugs that seem invincible. Lots of fungus gnats and white fly around too. No 2 spot spidermite around yet.

Doing the final tying up and securing the laterals today. Having to knock back a long way into the plants as they are growing so quick. In the small cactus, Oakwood goldcrest is causing the most problems finding some side shoots, so with that one it's a side shoot from a side shoot. Anything could happen with them.

Mine not growing much at all. 6 out of 40 Dikara Superb look healthy, the rest....................... Its poss that the cloud cover has put the brakes on growth a bit. Any road up, my seedling plants are mostly healthy. Lost 25% now, after being so careful during propagation as well!!!!! Looks like virus has come from a dikara superb tuber. (I record parentage of each cutting so I can trace back to specific tuber) Don't think I can put 3 vases of 5 min decs on at Harrogate now, which was the aim this year.

Secured first buds on 'Hillcrest Candy', 'George Marston', 'Barbarry Parade', Barbarry Sunbeam' and 'Kilburn Rose'. Not too sure how this hot weather will affect their opening times so I could have blooms too soon.

It'll bring opening times forward at least 5 days I reckon. Buds of Winholme Diane, of the normal size I use for timing, are showing signs of the first petals already, well in advance of what i'd expect. Luckily, I don't remove wing buds straight away, so main bud is coming off and one of those will be my bloom. Crazy. Even the giants are flying away. Fairway spur, a week ago, was just showing a bud the size of a penny. It'll be in full bloom in a fortnight.

Scrumpy, the plants you kindly sent me are doing well. There is one bloom open on Oakwood goldcrest but I have had several on Rycroft Zoe. As I type this I am looking at 3 nice blooms in a vase. My first show is in two weeks so I am hoping to show some then.

Usually the yellow centre gets more pronounced after a day or two in water, making it even more striking.
