With a bit of luck, Garden Friends will be having a outing to the Eccleshill Show next Sat. Fingers crossed we can get a red card for the forum. The weather forecast for Friday here is wet, wet, wet. That was the day I was going to cut whatever there is for the show on Saturday. I will take a chance and cut what young blooms there is Thursday evening because they are not covered and place them in the greenhouse until Sat Morning, then sort what is worth taking if any.

Same forecast for us here, Tel. Might cut some dahlias to take to show this weekend but my main focus this week is vegetables (NVS Welsh Branch Championships Sat/Sun). These are part of the Rhondda County Show so if I have time I may stage some dahlias in this. Won't be much - probably a couple of single vases.
Best of luck for your show.

We've got a show on Sunday and the forecast was for heavy rain on Friday and Saturday. Saturday is supposed to be better but Friday could well ruin what I have anyway. Fingers crossed for us all. With the last show it was pretty much a minor miracle that the roads were clear enough to get there. The fact I had anything to enter was an even bigger one.

I was asking David Gillam, how he managed to get his stems so straight. His answer is, he places 3 canes round every plant and strings round them 3 times. He also said he strips all the lateral growth from the stems all the way to the floor. So I take it from that, he only grows the number of blooms he requires on the first flush with no second flush later. Sorry it was his Midlands Championship winning exhibit. That must have been 2012 ? Phil Watson won the Midlands this year !! leaving Dave Gillam trailing in his wake by 13 points. The best two vases of Challengers I have seen this year were both from the Phil Watson stable at the Midlands. Proper semi cactus not the pointy narrow petal ones that are seen far too often today. All his stuff that day was top notch, Amber Festival, Oakwood Goldcrest, Leopold Chloe and as previously mentioned his Challangers. Top marks I must say and credit where credit is due. His moonlights were in a league of their own. A good Moonlight will always beat a good Candy any day of the week. I think the Candy's are getting a bit old. Another cracking exhibit was Ray Week's Sir Alf Ramsey's, I think Scrumpy had also come against his stock at Southport.

Not 2012 either as Dave did not manage an entry in the Championship last year. He only had five vases and three of those were poms I think.

There were a whole load of excellent giants at Southport. Made me want to grow Bonaventure and Hamari Gold again. Maybe one year I'll go back to growing a few more as a one off. As to the Candy's, general opinion seemed to be that Val's was the one to go for. Never grown Hillcrest but they said Val's was a lot more refined.

Looks like my ruskin michelle, oakwood goldcrest, ryecroft brenda t,charlie two and joan walker are going to be a little late after knocking them back.I will have some for next week but not the amount I would have liked.they could have done with another 7 days.Plenty of eastwood moonlight, ryecroft jan, mary's jomanda, jomanda, ruskin myra, marston lilac, leopold chloe, minley carol and gurtla twilight out and I am hopeful for marston george, hillcrest divine, hillcrest candy and gateshead festival.Weston pirate as flowered like mad for the last 3 weeks but most Blooms have been oversize where as my janal amy are not big enough they are a up to the large ring but not quite a giant.Weather forecast for tomorrow is very poor so hopefully there is no damping off touch wood I should have some good cuts over the next 2 weeks .We had a 1 bloom show at our society last night and I managed to win it with a cracking cherwell goldcrest pity I only have 4 plants.

Well the weather forecast for today was correct. I cut a few blooms yesterday including Garden Friends and placed them in the greenhouse until tomorrow morning. Then if there is a vase or 3 I will take them to the show. If there is no entries, or a exhibit worse than the one's I am taking in the Championship class, I will try and get 3 vases for that, £10 prize money will pay my expenses.
