Welcome to the forum, Markymate. We all get impatient waiting for them to wake up. Thanks Tel. I've been following your chats for a while and I thought I'd join in. Totally hooked on Dahlias for 3 years now, and have just built a warming bench. Took some cuttings last year, so I thought I'd take the plunge and really go for it. Will be need a lot of help on the way I think.

Welcome @markymate. We hope you keep our dahlia team busy. Thanks Cherry. Don't worry, I've got lots of questions, but I know I'll find the answers on these pages. Tel, just at this moment I grow just for the garden. Try to have a good show at the front and back garden so showing is a bit scary as I don't have enough knowledge yet. That said, I do have or will have 47 different dahlias for this summers display(providing my winter tubers come through ok).

Yes I know. I kind of figure that the more varities I grow, the more I'll learn about the dahlia. I get so much pleasure when they flower, perhaps it's because I'm new to gardening I suppose

I will put my two dahlias in heat today. I know now I must leave the top of the propagator off, but should I split the tubers to make them a more manageable size or leave them?

No Tel. I think the plants will be enough. In that case is it still too early because when I come back from Scotland on 28th would suit me better.

If I am not using them for cuttings, then i do not plant my tubers until the first week in May up here. By the time they are through the frosts will have finished.

Here's a real beginners question, Madam de Rosa is 8 inches tall, with a bud at the growing point. Do I remove it, or leave it on. HELP

HELP If you remove the buds, you are stopping the plant, then the side shoots will form quicker, giving earlier blooms from them. If you leave the growing point bud, the side shoots will flower later. I get quite a few that does the same thing.

Cheers Tel. I've cut the plant back to the second set of leaves, which will stop the side shoots from forming to early, hopefully . Alan Taylor, chairman of the Essex Dahlia Society told me that, along with Kiwi Gloria, madam de rosa can be a bit of a challenge to grow, as it's already proving. Hopefully, I've done the right thing, only time will tell.

Lots of action in the rooted cuttings in the main thread but mine are no where near ready for taking a cutting but that is ok, just seeing the tiny shoots and eyes makes me feel good because it means that I managed to dig them up without killing them all. A celebration in itself, me thinks.
