I've been reading on another forum about spraying slugs and snails with diluted ammonia. I'm planning to try it, due to curiosity about how well it works. The ammonia that doesn't land on gastropods just acts as a foliar feed, apparently.

I don't usually suffer with slugs, just lots of snails, but this year has been different. I've got both - in all sizes. The Phlox which has been cut back in the last week was covered with small snails! I've never seen so many.

The snails hide in my alstroemerias. Vast cities of them. I hope they make good fertiliser after I squish them. I suspect the French mainly eat them as a form of gardeners' revenge.

it depends if we have a mild winter, last year was wet rather than freezing, so, with the wet summer added to that, the numbers have exploded this year

They don't have them here. We are fed up with March flies though. Nasty biting things.
