We let it go but the poor thing won't survive for long out there, no food or anything.

Aww, there was a photo in the paper the other day of a small tortoiseshell out on a plant in the snow! Some of them hibernate in sheds/garages/houses etc. during the winter but as we've had relatively mild weather apart from the few days around Christmas I suppose they've woken up & started flying around.
