I have suckering trees in my bordering hedge which could be a type of willow. They sucker into the field where the hay cutter cuts them off every year. However, a lot have travelled to the footpaths between my veg beds and they are about 3 ins or more thick. Husband said his brushcutter strimmer will take the tops off, so I need a strong stump killer for the stumps which will be left. Some are already there and I am sick of tripping over them.
I expect I am looking at a stump killer like SBK. Has anyone any advice on this?

We used glyphosate on some sycamore saplings that were growing on the allotment....girth about 4/5"; took a couple of applications but they are truly dead......

Thanks Lou. That is good to know, but these are even tougher and grow from suckers, so just keep coming. The sycamores grow from seed, at an astonishing rate I know and I have dealt with these in other parts of the property.

I had a feeling that perhaps your suckers would be more of a problem.....I have heard good things of SBK...perhaps someone on the forum has used it and can give you first hand experience.

Like Glyphosate, SBK (Scrub and Brush Killer ) is absorbed through the leaves, I believe. So needs foliage to transport the killer down to the roots. If you only have foliage free stumps, then use something like root out. Just remember, that nothing will grow in that area for about 3 monthes after treatment, though.

I am only using it on the footpaths between the raised beds daitheplant so I would not be replanting, but there is something else in it besides glyphosate and I hope this will kill the stumps, else I will be stumped. I would have to wait until spring for growth. It does not appear that anyone on the forum has used SBK. I will just read about it.

I`ve used it and it is more suitable for killing brambles than tree stumps.

I used a tree stump killer on a sycamore stump in the front garden at the last house we lived in. cannot remember what the name of the stump killer was though. I had to cut a little bit of the stump to fresh wood and applied the stump killer with a brush.

I think I can do that with SBK Tel because it is used in varying degrees of strength depending on what it is being used for. I have bought it now, so it had better work. Below is some of the description. The stumps are about 3" across. It contains Triclopyr, whatever that is. Maybe that is the secret ingredient which kills the stumps. Vitax SBK Brushwood Killer is a selective weedkiller for brambles, nettles, dock, woody weeds, hardwood saplings and tree stumps in grass and other neglected ....

I have used SBK cherry to get rid of an encroaching fig tree and also cut down apple trees. What I did was to drill holes into the wood and pour the liquid in then cap with plasticine or similar. Also tried copper nails but that wasn't very effective. The SBK did work but took time. You still need to remove the dead bits by cutting out or what seems likely in your case, by sawing off at base. Either that or wait for them to rot away in the fulness of time. One of the hardest jobs I had was to get rid of lilac suckers in a garden. Tried all sorts of things including SBK, weedex and some other weedkllers plus exposing the roots and ripping off but as far as I know they are still there as I moved from the area.

I've got a tree trump I need out. Smack bang in the middle of where my ball and dec dahlias are going to go. If only I had had a root grinder at the time. Like they had out front garden. Oh well.

Taking it in sweetpea. I think you are right and it goes along with Tel's advice. Thank you.
