Thanks Cat. Well, what a great day at the Midlands Society show, despite some big showmen unable to turn up( Dave Spencer, John Jack, etc.). There was still an impressive array of blooms on show, and well done to all the organizers of the show for all their hard work, not to mention the bacon rolls and in-limited tea and coffee during staging, plus a lovely lunch and a beer or wine. If only all shows were this good. So to all at the Midlands, a very loud round of applause, you certainly deserve it!!!!
Now down to the nitty gritty. The Midlands Championship went to our very own Ian Sutherland, who just about went on to win every other classes available, best vase, second best vase, etc. Seemed to me as I was going round checking my results, every red card had, I. Sutherland written on it. Well done Ian, really lovely blooms, especially your Barbarry Surprise( don't forget me next year!), in my opinion, humble as it is, the best vase in show. Well done to Steve Burns as well. Turned up with a swag bag of trophies he won last year, and despite handing many over to Ian, still went home with a couple of pots, well done mate. Look forward to seeing you both again at the National on the 6th. Thanks again for all the great advice, always good to meet up and chat about dahlias. Oh, I nearly forgot me . Managed a 1st and 3 thirds in my first try at the intermediate classes, so slowly making progress. Upwards and onwards.....
Ian's Championship winning display. Amongst many others!! Securicor had to deliver his prize monies .

On a much smaller scale, Ramsbottom show Lancashire today. Amazing Glads, Chrysants, Roses and of course Dahlias. Pleased to get a second and two thirds with my 3 Dahlia vases. Somebody called I Sutherland cleaned up in all the Dahlia classes! After a poor summer weatherwise, the Dahlias down at the plot are finally having a go. Some good performers for me, good old Jomanda, Ross Luke, Andrea coming along great. Prep neckache! Goldcrest Roses More neckache Ross Luke Rotation by Tinypic

I don't think I've posted Ches results from the Cornwall Dahlia Society show at Trelissick. 6 x 1st, 1 x 2nd, 3 x trophies. Best in class with Karen Glen that Che staged completely on his own- so this is the best result of them all. I was persuaded by Roy Knight to do a bowl arrangement at the last minute. Roy also let me stage what became a couple of his winning vases. Everyone was so kind and didn't mind Che lending a hand. A great day

Well done David, lovely looking veg and your blooms are really nice. And yes, Mr Sutherland has a gift for turning up a taking all the top prizes .
Top results Che, you'll definitely won't want anybody doing your vases from now on . I bet you're as proud as punch of your lad, Cat. And well done to you as well, arranging a basket is no easy task....

Just four days away from the National now. Hopefully have something decent out of this lot. Spent the last few days having a bit of a clear out, stripping out anything under sized or past it, still plenty left though!! Thanks for the advice Ian and Steve, should have better sized blooms for Harrogate now. Got a local show on Sunday, Knebworth Horticultural Society, so have entered all bar one dahlia class which'll help cut back even more . Then a very early cut Monday morning, for Wisley the following day's show.
Got luck to all showing this weekend, and look forwarded to seeing some of you at Wisley on Tuesday.

For the past 2 seasons I have struggled with the weather, All my Kenora challengers are watermarked this year , so its covers for me next year, Johndoe, what are the dimensions of your covers? and is the plastic all in one sheet? I was thinking of using white tarps, do you think it would block too much light?
Did a local show last week and got 2 x 1sts, a 2nd and a 3rd, and been staging today for the beverley show, seeing the quality of some of the blooms grown under covers has made my mind up.

Been to a cracking small show today at Whitefield Lancs today. First time there but I'd go again for definite. Very high standard of veg and Dahlias. Most classes cram full. They even had Besses o'th Barn brass band playing in the afternoon! Our Derek did exceptionally well in both veg and flowers. I managed some firsts too but happiest about MSC 'Robs Symbol' getting me a medal, Luke and Ruby and Andrea were presentable but the Robs created a bit of interest amongst the Dahlia nuts. John Doe have a look see what you think! Alan, all my Dahlias are in the open but agreed the under cover ones always look better. Good luck to all showing in the coming weeks.

First of all David, well done at the show mate, there's nothing better than a well supported local show. Secondly, your Rob's Symbol look terrific, I think it's a better bloom than Clearview Louise, but then again I think Louise should be a large, rather than a medium.....but hey, what do I know . Both my pot tubers of Rob's are now cut back, so it's lovely to see your photos. Had a good show today, 7 firsts, and one second, plus best exhibit in show. And going back to Cat's earlier post about bad judges not knowing their balls from their decs, and their miniatures from their smalls, and getting NAS for no reason. Well I got a dose of that today. Got NAS for a vase of Gateshead Festival for being over sized, when they went through the small ring with a half inch to spare!! The show secretary said he must have confused the classes as it was a miniature/small dec class, say he might have thought it was just a miniature class. Hope the judging at the National is of a better standard.......only kidding guys, NDS judges are the best!!!!!
Jomanda Best exhibit in show, Sir Alf. Shame the exhibitors were down on last year, but still enough to make a decent show.
