WF yours are ready for planting Merlin i chit mine on a window sill, or in the frost free greenhouse, do not cover them. So I'm not too far out, I have mine in the conservatory but they're nothing like as advanced as WF's.

I thought I'd plant the week after next as I'm able to cover with fleece. Farmers earth-up only once (I think) My 'spud bed' is only 3' wide so it's difficult to earth-up two rows. I'm wondering whether to remove soil, plant a few inches deep then return the soil as the shoots appear. Do the new tubers grow below the original seed as well as above, and do you get more spuds by covering with more soil?

New spuds grow off the chits or shoots Ron so they should be above the original spud and earthing up will increase the crop

I think I'll leave it 'till the end of next week before planting. I'll cut out a trench of soil and bag it up so that it will be easier to cover them more as they grow.

Mine are chitting in trays in an unheated spare bedroom and looking similar to WF,s. The ground here is far too wet and cold to even consider planting yet. I prefer to wait until the ground has warmed up a bit.

I have that all purple variety 'Purple Majesty' chitting right now. I kept them back from a bag I bought at local supermarket last winter. Lovely taste too, just their purple colouring may put some off. As the purple pigment is a very strong antioxidant, this may also help it along on the popularity stakes in future though. I'll be putting mine in big plastic buckets.
