You have great patience johnjess and everything is so tidy and neat. i love the idea of the heated mat. I have a heated table with sand. I usually grow my dahlias from seeds. Thank you Ladybird, I am a bit obsessive about my greenhouse, I think it keeps down the chance of virus and the like.
Everyone should have an heat mat, Ladybird. I use to have the cable and sand but loads of wasted heat and messing around. Replaced them with Hotbox heatwave mats, absolutely perfect, economical, clean, and no cold spots. Made to measure and roll them up and store when not in use.
If you are interested give Jill Thornton a call, she's brilliant.

Did not realise you can put chicken pellets in with the tubers.... ? Does this throw up more cuttings do you think

Did not realise you can put chicken pellets in with the tubers.... ? Does this throw up more cuttings do you think Hi gingins, I always put a small handful of chicken pellets in the bottom of the trays. Once the tubers are up and shooting, especially small pot tubers, they'll soon go through the feed in the compost and then struggle later on, effecting the quality of the cuttings. So to answer your question, it won't give you anymore cuttings than the eyes on the tuber, but it definitely will give you better quality cuttings later on, which for me is important as I take my competition cuttings in the middle of April.
If you want to have more cuttings it is important to cut properly. Never take a piece of tuber, always cut just above the surface of the tuber. That way you'll find the tuber will produce another 3 to 4 shoots.

Hi guys, I've had one or two cuttings failed this week ( black stems) though most are doing ok. I thought I'd check Halls of Heddon website to see what was available just in case it all went pear shaped with my other cuttings. Unfortunately for me they are showing as sold out for dahlias.
It's now a bit like walking a tightrope without a safety net for me !!!
Great news for Hall's though and shows how popular Dahlias are.

Thank you ian for your very kind offer but I think I will have more than enough plants by the end of the month. My better half is already asking why I am still taking cuttings when the trays in the propagator are almost full!!! I am prone to being too keen to water I'll try to keep an eye on that and I'll prop up the lid of my propagator to help airflow.
Thanks for taking the time to reply. Good luck for the season.

Well, after a very slow and cold April, things are moving on much quicker now. Finally built a cold frame to ease the burden on the greenhouse, and me having to take trays out in the morning and then putting them all away again at night.
Allotment is coming on, my Wisley National plant plot is ready for planting out in a couple of weeks. Tomorrow will see the Harrogate plot finished, then just need to hope that these shows get the go ahead.
Good luck to everybody growing and showing this year.
Was hoping to post some pictures, but website not allowing it!

All looks good but a lot of hard work, i've only got 6 this year which are all doing good Hi Lesley, no, all the plants on all four plots are for shows only. Any blooms not used are given to other allotment holders. And of course I bring some home for my wife!!
Any plants that don't make the plots will become part of my annual plant sale at the allotment.
Glad to hear your dahlias are growing well, have a lovely summer, if it ever arrives

Hi all, got all the dahlias planted now, and looking forward to the National at Wisley and the Northern National at the venue of Newby Hall, Ripon. One plot is for Wisley and the other one is for Newby Hall. The smaller ones are for stock plants. All the plants are in the polytunnels are giant decoratives.
Hope everyone is having a good growing season so far, and your dahlias are blooming lovely.

Looking good johndoe. Very neat and tidy.
Is there a reason for different beds for different shows?
My trial for this year is to time my plants for a small local flower show which usually takes place on the third Saturday of August. I'm not sure that it's taking place this year again due to the current situation but I can practice my timing anyway. I have three miniatures, Mary's Jomanda,Marston Snowball and Josudi Hercules which need two stops and also Sheval Megan with one stop.(3 plants of each) I gave the miniatures a first stop while still in their pots so now just need to time the final stop for them all. Would sixty days before the show date be a reasonable estimate for the final stop?
