Hello all. Thanks for the welcome. Yes - I grow flowers, veg, some fruit plus lots of weeds! I've given up trying to have a pristine garden as it was spoiling the enjoyment of it all. I will now have a look at the Forums and work my way around them.

Welcome tortilly.
You'll have a good giggle with some of the postings and learn a lot, as I have done, from the many experts here.

That's very kind of you to say that ..... but there is always a lot more to learn. I am hopeless at plant names, unless they are in my Keeble-Martin's Complete British flora.

Does it matter dianthus? It is like spelling or math. I am really bad at math, but it does not show up on here. Some of our members can design a garden beautifully. Some can't (me actually!).

rosie. I'm glad I'm not the only one, but several of our esteemed forumites talk about the plants they have bought and, most of the time, I haven't got a clue what they are talking about, unless they say Clematis or Wigelia, for example. I ought to sit here with a garden plant book, but I think I prefer to enjoy the banter and try to learn over time

The garden here, consisted of some hedging, a couple of mock cherry and what had become a hay meadow back and front.
I converted a disused swing area into my first veg plot, and the second after moles and/or rats had turned another part of the lawn into crazy paving effect, in foot deep snow Feb 2013, so it was a good excuse for me to ask the landlords if I could cultivate that too.
I just cut the grass and trim back some of the hedging, but really have no idea what the plants are..... but know they aren't privet or box

dianthus if the hedge is not privet or box and you think it could be similar, could it be Lonicera nitida?

Let us have some pics, Di. What, by the way, is a mock cherry?
