Decided to look if our blackbird had laid any more eggs (they do lay 5 sometimes). The bird was sat on the nest but there was only one egg. The same thing happened last year and I think the culprit must have been a magpie.

It is very sad when that happens and you could be right about the magpie. It happens here a lot and birds make loud din when they are defending their eggs.

That's a shame, I think there were eggs in our blackbird nest which a cat disturbed & they abandoned. With luck though they will all try again, maybe in different nests.

One of my blackbird visitors must have young ones, I noticed today that its collecting up sultanas in its beak to take back to the nest Also spotted a blue tit going into the nesting box with some nesting material.

Your place is turning into The Killing Fields Peony. Nature can be horrible.

As you probably know,I organise the Salford garden bird survey which takes place over Christmas and New Year. One lady ,on her survey form recorded a PEACOCK (yes a peacock! ).I couldn,t believe that anybody would see a peacock in their garden and I didn,t know whether to include it in the report. It isn,t a big garden either 'just a semi detached house on a housing estate. Anyway I know the lady and I asked her about it and she assured me that it was correct. She phoned the R.S.P.C.A.and they said just treat it like any wild bird and they couldn't do anything about it unless it was injured (which it wasn't ) I asked her about it again last weekend and would you believe,it is still about. (4 months later )She showed me some pictures of it. She said all the neighbours were fed up with it as it was being a nuiscance eating plants in peoples gardens and going on cars and leaving "messages"everywhere.

Hard to believe, but true. The cat was in the kennel run drinking the birds' water because his had run out and the birds were feeding at their feeders exactly right above him. Next time I will try to photograph him doing this. They all know each other.

The Golden Oriele has been spotted in Swaffham which is quite close to here.
The Norfolk cuckoos are arriving back home, but my own cuckoo is not here yet.
