Great pictures, SueA
I had a spotted woodpecker visit my last home, as it backed on to a birch wood (it is also a bluebell wood), and I used to hear it tapping, more than I ever saw it. I did find out what it was trying to get at, though - the bluetit nest box in the sycamore tree!!

That's the unfortunate thing about them isn't it dianthus , they're beautiful but will go for any little baby birds they can spot. I'll have to think about getting those nesting boxes reinforced with metal around the entrance hole in future if we keep getting woodpeckers but I bet they would still try & peck through the sides or the roof!

I forgot I took a little short video of the woodpecker on the peanut feeder through the windows on my compact camera, just uploaded it, only about 40 secs.

SueA, what kind of infra red camera do you have? I know you have said before, I was telling Graham about it and he's interested in getting one. We took some pics of a woodpecker the other day, I think it was a youngster too, it was quite funny watching trying to grab onto a tray of food and it slid right across it I'm really pleased we still have the Yellowhammers coming in, malke and female. Esp as they are red status.

Rosie it's a Swann Outback Cam , we got it from Maplins, a bit hit & miss at times as it doesn't like frost, mist, lots of rain & when the sun first comes up it struggles to change from infrared black & white to colour at first but fairly cheap so I suppose you get what you pay for. I manage to get some reasonable photos though & it lets you know what's wandering around the garden at night, you have to play with the settings, timer & height off the ground, distance etc. to get what you want in the frame but it's good fun. The one we've got is battery operated but if you have electricity outside a wired system might be better quality but I like this one as you can move it around & can just take the SD card out of it to put the pictures or video on the computer. With wired ones you can 'livestream' them onto your TV or computer though but they are usually a bit more expensive.

We had one living near the stream in my childhood village..... trilling its 'A little bit of bread and no cheese' song

Thanks SueA, I shall let Graham know. We have a security camera set that will be installed when my dearly beloved can climb a ladder. That takes night time film so we may set one up overlooking the garden. Thats exactly how they sound dianthus , the male is so brightly coloured. They don't fly away as quickly now, maybe they are getting used to seeing us around the garden

Two young male goldfinches swooped in this afternoon, saw no bird seed, and flitted off again. Lovely to see them, though

SueA great vid of Woody plus that other one of the love Affair brought back more than a few memories. thanks for posting. Loads of jackdaws round the fatball feeder today so decided to video them but the minute I got the camera lined up they departed. Thought it was me that scared them off but then saw a cat so another opportunity missed. Also yesterday for the very first time saw a MAGPIE on the feeder, yes a magpie. Well at least I left the camera accessible for next time hopefully.

Lovey Dovey.... rosie that is a coincidence as Maureen has done a painting of two collared doves and its titled, 'Lovey Dovey' She has done quite a few birds now, currently working on a Bee Eater She gets her paintings turned into greeting cards so I will try and take a pic of that one and post here or even better if you pm your address again I will send you one. not that I am bragging but she is a pretty good artist and apart from birds she has painted other peoples' dogs from pics they've supplied. Just had a thought, will see if I can photocopy and post.No go with that idea as ISP has gone pear shaped

When I put out the peanuts fatballs etc' I usually put a tray on top of the structure with berry/suet pellets. The jackdaws, magpies, and many of the smaller birds go for it big time. This morning imagine my surprise when I saw a herring gull having a fair old feed while the jackdaws had to wait. Pecking order
