I can remember the disease that hit the greenfinches, but that's good to know they're on the increase. I have loads of sparrows here SueA I think we're quite lucky as we still have plenty of the old style hedgerows around and farmers have to leave cutting until August. Wonder why wagtails like carparks steve ? maybe there's plenty of insects around either that or they're learning to drive

We did have 4 sparrows in the garden yesterday grindle which is 3 more than usual so maybe they are making a bit of a comeback around here too, we used to get dozens years ago though. All the birds were frantically searching the gardens for nesting sites yesterday & the blackbirds keep trying out the log stores we have by the patio & garage - not really suitable at all but they seem to be attracted to them, we had the goldfinches & a pair of longtail tits, the great tits looking in the 'caravan' birdhouse, a bluetit checking out the birdhouse on the shed & the 2 robins flitting in & out of the bushes.

I heard noises in the kitchen yesterday morning and a great tit had managed to find its way indoors, it was startled when I appeared and flew into the window, slightly stunning itself, I managed on a second attempt to get it and went outside, it flew to the trellis and sat for a few minutes then flew away, glad it didn't hurt itself

Groan steve! Glad you managed to get it out in one piece grindle. We had one of the most ungainly dopey looking birds I've ever seen in the garden the other day - a baby woodpigeon, it could fly but hadn't quite mastered landing! Didn't see it yesterday so I hope the cats didn't get it. The little sparrows are increasing in numbers too, about 5 yesterday & these 2 this morning with the robin:-

A fair lot of sparrows but the tits seem to have vanished and the amount of fat balls we are getting through is ridiculous. this the 2nd container (50) this week alone. the jackdaws are really knocking them back and even had a crow a few times. roll on pension day cos i'm skint now.

Good grief sweetpea that's a lot of (fat) balls! You'll have to ration them & only put out a few at a time, the starlings here are going mad for those 'fat square blocks' but I've only put 3 out this week & have run out so they'll have to forage, they are poking holes in the lawn to find chafer grubs/leatherjackets etc.

A young jay has been visiting for the last couple of days, the blackbird has taken against it though & keeps chasing it away as it has fledglings nearby so it has to sneak in when he's not around.

The swifts are back. Saw a small flock of 4 or 5 when out in the garden this morning. No doubt we will see the swallows before long.

the birds are going mad at the moment, so many babies, first the sparrows, now the blue and great tits, robins, starlings, even the jackdaws have been raiding the fat balls, looks like it's going to be a good year for them all

We've got lots of babies around too at the moment a dozen little sparrows were in the garden yesterday & some scruffy little baby bluetits. The baby jay keeps visiting too, not as wary as the adult birds it comes down for bird food.

latest drama here. Young jackdaw found its way into house and ended up under a low glass coffee table where no one could access it. I finally managed to drive it into a cat carrier and put it out in the back walled courtyard where it would be safe. It was let out in the morning but seemed unable to fly. it did eat all the food we put in the basket overnight. I placed my window cleaning point ladder against a part of wall that juts out and it hopped up the rungs one at a time and stayed up on the wall. every time that I went out to replenish the bird food it would panic and flutter down to the ground but as soon as I went in it would go up the ladder again. We think it had a damaged wing but this morning it had gone. I watched all the jackdaws but every one could fly so I can only presume it had got better.
