i am new to keeping dahlias i read on the forum that some growers plant there the cutting in pots then put the pots in the ground why do they do that is it for ease of lifting or to keep the tubers small if so what size pot do u use also when u lift them again do u take them out of the pot and prepare them the sameway as u would when u lift them out of the ground or are they kept in the pots all the time as i say i am just a novice grower of dahlias

Hi Robh....I think you are referring to "pot tubers"....growers use pot tubers for the following year's cuttings....normally grown in 3-4 inch pots....this keeps the tubers small, and easy to store....ready for setting over some heat the following early spring, ready to sprout for cuttings......you can get as much cutting material from these as you do "full grown" tubers. Of course dahlias can be grow successfully in pots throughout the season....but need plenty of water and feed. Could I suggest you post your questions on the relevant "dahlia threads" i.e. dahlias for beginners.....etc., more enthusiasts are likely to read your questions and add to them and benefit from more experienced growers advice

I am pleased Lou mentioned that the Beginners thread would suit your questions Rob. There is another good reason. You may notice the 'sticky' icon next to the title of the thread, so it will always be available and should not disappear in time the way the others do. They are interesting questions and you can look forward to super blooms next season.
