I know what you mean Rob!!....we all suffer from wanting to grow everything, but don't have the room ....Could I suggest you make a list, or three, of 1) how many plants you can realistically grow. 2) what types you like. say.... ...decs....cacti...pompons....mins.small, med, la...colorettes......the list is endless. There are plenty of sites to browse before making your choices.... If you haven't grown them before, start off with a half a dozen, and see how you get on......then build up your collection........ Hope this helps

Don't let the dahlia growers on here brainwash you, like they have with me, or like myself they will have going from growing a few dahlias for pleasure in your garden, to growing some for your local show next. That's the way these dahlia growers work on here to swell their numbers. Now i try to leave but they have you in a vice like grip, escape is impossible, so do not let them suck you in like they did with me. ;D

You can do both Robh ;D.....if you want to increase your stock. Set tubers in damp compost from Feb-April and take cuttings, then you can plant the tuber in the ground or pots, at the end of May...Result ;D ....more dahlias.....

Hi robh, I also wanted to grow loads of dahlias but didn't really have the space at the time. i still managed to cover our local spring, summer and autumn shows by growing daffodils, sweetpeas and dahlias plus loads of veg. As for dahlias I managed quite well (if prize cards are anything to go by) by only growing 3 of each variety required to cover the schedule. There are different ways to cater for shows. Some folks grow loads of plants and pick out their best ones at the time, I prefer to grow less plants but give them more individual attention. swings and roundabouts really so if you got the time to tend 5,000 plants then do so but you will have better quality control with less. regardless of whether its dahlias, sweetpeas or whatever.
