I ordered small plants as they were cheaper than tubers so I can't get cuttings, can I? Will I get tubers from the plants next year.I feel bad that I can't offer Tel and Rosie cuttings of the dahlias they like As Lou says, your plants should produce tubers for you to lift in the Autumn. I grow all my cut flower dahlias from plants each year, you get stronger stems, better colour and bigger blooms. Really depends what you grow them for; if you want a space in the border filled with colour them starting with a tuber can work better, it will be a bigger and bushier plant. Downside is weaker stems and smaller blooms. You will find that everyone that grows for the show bench will take cuttings each year.

It worked for me.

WF will advice you on growing dahlias for showing, no problem.
Don't you go getting any ideas that I can do this without you Tel, in another couple of years I may cut the umbilical cord but right now I am still dependent on your knowledge.
I hope it is not painful. ;D

Help! I have yellow aphids and red spider mites on some of the dahlias. What's the best way to get rid of them besides buying ladybugs? I can't find anyone selling ladybugs and ladybug larvae locally. The dahlias are in the roofdeck so they're just a couple of feet away from my hydroponic vegetables so chemical pesticide is probably not a good idea.

Try misting the dahlias daily....that will help with the red spider mite....for the aphids....an insecticide spray carefully applied should not harm your veggies...or....blast them off with the hosepipe...that will help with the red spide mite as well

Did the misting daily for 3 days and after doing a google search I found out that praying mantis eats aphids and spider mites, so I spent sunday afternoon with an improvised insect net and caught a few praying mantis outdoors. Relocated them on the roof deck and today I found a lot less pests on all the plants there.

My son wanted dragonfly and praying mantis duties though, said I had all the fun lol. Even presented me with 3 dragonflies after he saw me trying to catch insects. I forgot to mention that Hubby was laughing at us the whole time, good thing pysch hospitals are far from us though as I think he would have dumped me there.

I think they are thanks Lou. I still misted them this morning and haven't seen any more aphids and the spider mites seem to be disappearing
