If I till the soil for dahlias, how deep should I go and how far apart should I space them on a slope? We have tough red clay and I want to putt dahlias in here -- I'm thinking they wouldn't drown during the rainy season as water drains away quickly in here. Yep, I probably have to work in lots of compost and stuff don't have a problem with that as we got lots of it, it's just the hard work that's going to take quite a bit of time. This is where I want to put them, I apologize for the crappy pictures as it was taken with my cellphone with a shaky hand (too much coffee)... The tree dahlia cuttings I managed to grow would go on top to as some sort of privacy fencing, then the rest of the dahlias (mostly dinnerplate dahlias) in a terraced hillside bed. I will adjust the depth and width of each level according to how much space each one needs. This is where I want to put in terraced beds: This one is what I want to put tree dahlias around: Do y'all think that's a good location? Or would they suffer from too much sun in there? It's sunny in there the whole day as it's the highest spot of land. The "climber" is actually a large rambling hibiscus that we trained over the the metalwork. We tried climbing roses but it didn't like being buffeted by winds and fried by the sun all day.
