I have had no luck in logging on to Station House Dahlia's today at all. Their loss, Halls gain. Ordered a few pom plants,, 3 Gurtla Twilight, 2 Noreen, 2 Rhonda and 2 Willo's Violet, I have not got a clue how to grow them though. ;D I was going to order Leopold Sophie, but Halls do not have that one, So i ordered 4 Leopold Chloe and 2 Barbarry Melody. Hi Tel, Willo's Violet was the variety I had when I entered my first dahlia show - it won best vase in novice section so I have a soft spot for it. I managed to get hold of some pot tubers so intend to grow it again this year. Checking back to how I grew it in 2004 my records show it as follows: Cuttings taken between mid February and mid March. Two stops given prior to planting out. Another stop given around end of June. Any premature blooms were knocked back. Plants were put in 3ft apart and filled that space. Hope this may help you and any other new pom growers. I just hope that method still works!!! Thanks for the info Mark.

Your right about brenda t Tel it was a bad year for it but as regards to chloe I just think it does'nt have as many people growing it as some other small dec varieties namely the dianes.

I grow Brends T its not my favourate due to it having quite large petals for a small but I did win a big class with it at the midlands single bloom show last year knocking quite a few windolme and primrose dianes and others off their perch. When speaking with the judge afterwards he said it won because its centre was better than those in the class. Its an OK multivase exhibit or lower grade, but it will never beat consistantly the dianes in top class competition. I wish something would come along to challenge them but its hard to look past them at the moment.

Being new here and reading the forum, i got impression that in the UK you are growing certain varieties for showing, i mean all of you having the same varieties for showing, correct me if i am wrong but this is the impression i get. Different then here in holland it seems. This is also confirmed a bit on the youtube channel from dave gillam i found, about the shows in the UK, many the same flowers.

Welcome to the forum edwin. you are right about what you are saying, about the top exhibitors showing practically the same blooms. over here in Britain in the national shows you have to grow the top show varieties to have any chance of competing at that level. In the smaller local shows, you will find a little more variety on show.

Hiya Edwin, I think that you and Tel are right about exhibitors like to grow blooms that they know do well in shows but having the internet has opened up a wider variety of opportunities to trail new varieties that are popular in other countries.
My Father has ordered several dahlias from at least 2 dahlia suppliers in the US. I think he is interested in discovering new varieties that are popular overseas and I am sure that he is thinking of potential future seedlings. I've spent hours trying to find a supplier of a US dahlia called Candy Jayne. Dad wanted me to order dahlias and I saw Candy Jayne on their website and fell in love with it. When I tried to order it with all of my Dad's dahlias, I was told that they were not selling it this year (but my fingers are crossed for next year) and no where in the UK seems to grow it. US dahlia orders are so expensive because they have to get a special licence which along with packing cost more than the dahlias on the shopping list. I can't justify that expense on 1 licence to order just one Candy Jayne dahlia. I would be very interested if someone in Holland sell it.
I am going to be growing two US dahlias Clearview Arlene and Clearview Jenny (which is a new introduction this year) but I am a beginner here, so fingers crossed that I can do these varieties justice.

Hi Moonlight, i seen the prices in the USA also, way too expensive. About the candy jane, you ever checked out mick's peppermint, i got this one and a kind called sturm MFD (first price winner, you can find it in the 2007 section of www.zeelanddahlia.nl )which both look almost the same. From both kinds taking cuttings this year.....

From both kinds taking cuttings this year..... Edwin what does MFD stand for? I wish I could read Dutch, I am sure that there is a way to translate web pages into English but I don't know how yet. There was just something about Candy Jayne that I really liked. You know how you like a lot of different flowers colours etc. and then you come across one that you can quite say what it is but it looks extra special but necessary a future champion. The stripes looked quite evenly spread on the petals and the shape of the petals themselves.www.clearviewdahlias.com/p/?pid=87Clearview Jenny that I've ordered is variegated but it is totally different colours. I'd set my heart on Candy Jayne so I bought that one instead because I wanted to buy a variegated variety. Since ordering it, I've seen other variegated varieties. I like ordering varieties that have been winners in the past because it leads me to think 'well maybe one day I could be lucky............' Good luck with the cuttings but it sounds like you are an expert anyway.

I have no idea what MFD stands for, it is just a kind grown by a friend of mine. I am not an expert but lately have joint problems and because of that a lot of time to read and learn, growing dahlias for few years only but next year will be slightly bigger....
