I have no idea what MFD stands for, it is just a kind grown by a friend of mine. I am not an expert but lately have joint problems and because of that a lot of time to read and learn, growing dahlias for few years only but next year will be slightly bigger.... I think that is a problem with growing dahlias Sorry to hear about your health problems.

MFD could be some sort of Medium Decorative?...or Medium Fimbriated Dahlia?....

MFD usually stands for Medium Formal Decorative (as opposed to Informal Decorative) it has to do with the way the petals form on the flower. The National Dahlia Society introduced this a few years ago but have since abandoned the idea.

I know that they have been abandoned now but I wonder what they were looking to achieve and I wonder why it didn't work.

I don't know what they were hoping to achieve. As an example BJ Beauty was classified as an Informal Medium Decorative while Charlie Two was classified as a Formal Medium Decorative.

Very confusing, don't really get the difference looking at the pictures on the internet. It is probably much more obvious when you see them in the petal (flesh )
I think that I am a bit of a dahlia snob. I see lots of the newer varieties beautiful colours and patterns on the petals but a lot seem erm scruffy. I was wondering if that would have been the difference. I like petals to be uniform (as opposed to in uniform ). That probably doesn't make any sense to anyone other than me.
Glad that they dropped it.

Busy morning taking another 31 cuttings, and moving some of the trays of tubers back to the cold glasshouse as they are growing too quickly. I think I'll rotate the trays so that all get held back slightly. Some of the earlier cuttings look to be sitting straighter so have hopefully started to root.
All tubers set up are now showing signs of growth which is a relief, although some are throwing very thick shoots which are no doubt hollow.

I was contemplating buying a poly tunnel for some of the dahlias. Now gone off the idea. One of the allotment holders erected a tunnel recently, it lasted two days before vandals had a go at it

That is appalling Tel and very disappointing for the owner. In fact you would all feel for him. The allotments are locked too. That is a great pity because you could do with a tunnel.
