Do you allow the small seedlings to get much sunlight Tel? When i transplant them into pots i keep them shady for a few days until they settle down. Same with cuttings when they are potted up.

My dahlia has grown by nearly half and gets the sun for a lot of the day, but it looks very healthy and is short-coupled. Well that is how we describe dogs, so you will have to work it out. It is not leggy. It looks good in fact. Perhaps I will move it slightly so it is only in sun for a portion of the day.

Only 3 dahlia varieties left now on the heated bench, for further cuttings. Still taking cuttings. Been my worst season for a long time for cutting material. Normally the first batch are discarded, ie, given away, but this year I'll be having to use a lot of them for planting out myself. Some varieties just haven't produced follow on material. Looks like next year I'll be keeping 3 tubers of each variety for cuttings, and growing pot tubers as back up.

You are not on your own scrumpy, the deadline for entries for the dahlia trials have been extended too.

Ever get the feeling it's going to be a long hard season again The only plus side is that as the early cuttings aren't growing very fast ( they would normally be in 5" pots by now) they should be Ok at planting out time. And I'll probably only use half the compost I normally do.

Took the last cuttings of 'Trelyn Kiwi' today which I hope to have for Malvern Autumn Show - weather permitting. More rooted cuttings have been potted on, along with 8 'Trelyn Kiwi' which have gone into 5 inch pots. Also done quite a few tuber divisions of poor throwing cultivars.
Feels like it's already been a 'long hard season' scrumpy!

Allotments have dried out nicely now and are both ready to rotovate which I will be doing in about 2/3 weeks time.I can now get on and finish clearing an unused area for a leek trench and onion trench (I have joined the local wmc show after years of them badgering me to join). At the moment I only have 200 dahlias potted up with 50 of them being janal amy and hillcrest candy. There is 250 in the propagator so I am hoping the majority have rooted,I will be having a look today and taking my last batch of cuttings of most varieties.I will only hang on a bit longer with some early flowering varieties.Looks like we are never going to get 2 seasons the same again last year early growth was good then they slowed down this season early growth has been slow,I only hope they now get a move on and save this season.

You have learnt a lot about the dahlias and now you probably can't bear to have bad ones, so your garden will always look good. I pulled out all my bad dahlias and won't grow these sort again. The sweetpea growing for show did the same thing to me. Now I like to grow good ones which are much more satisfying.
