In Facebook, there is a brand new group to help out people searching for hard to find Dahlia varieties. It is international, and there are some well known names on board already. The link is www.facebook.com/groups/580472175311834/ and you will probably be looking for a "request to join" button or similar, unless one of your friends has rudely added you without even asking your permission... not that I would do that... very often

Not being on facebook it's not a lot of use to me. Why don't they have a proper web link that isn't exclusive.

I am sorry that not everyone is able to use it. I just thought it would be handy for some.

hear, hear Scrumpy......I don't really like Facebook......but can't find a way to delete my account I have never been on Facebook. My daughters in Australia told me that the forum is my personal facebook and all the members are my friends and have the same hobby. Perfect.

I was dead against facebook, my husband was on it and people that wanted to be in contact with me requested to be his friend. Then a couple of years ago, he noticed that one of his friend contacts had the name of someone I affectionately called my 'big brother' as one of their contacts. So I decided to sign up to facebook and then sending a friendship request let he know my maiden name. It ended up with us meeting up again after about 15 years with our families and time just flew.
So I am glad that I have signed up with facebook but I can understand why people don't but it was because of my 'big brother' that I did. We both know that if ever either of us needs support we will be there for each other.
Forum communities like this one have the potential to develop deeper friendships than facebook tends to. Rather than mini updates and random comments in a couple of lines, people take the time to listen to each other and respond fully. Strangers can become friends very quickly. I like communities because you can open up and share about things that really matter to you, with similar interests, experiences.
Much as you like or love your friends & family you don't always want to share / bore them with every single thing that you want to talk about, for example if you are expecting and you can be in a group with other people with the same due date. Most friends won't want to know the gory details of your pregnancy or your fears when you have an antenatal test done and you discover that there might be something wrong with your baby. It can help having an online shoulder to cry on.
Updates on how much weeding you have done or how well your dahlias tubers are doing might not be relevant or something that your friends will be able to identify with. Unfortunately Forum and communities can attract 'trolls' who try and just cause trouble, tell lies and wind people up but it can build strong friendships. You can't believe someone is always telling the truth.
You do have to be careful anywhere on the internet. I am excited to have a chance to find some dahlias that I have been searching for but before I do post on that facebook group I am going to make sure that none of my family albums are visible to strangers. You can't be too careful, common sense is vital and if I find one of those dahlias on my list it will be worth it.

I too have a similar experience on facebook to Moonlight. I may start a new thread on this in Non Gardening Chat. Then it does not clog up the dahlia thread.

My experience is in 'over the garden fence' so that I don't mess up your dahlia thread.
