steve2t, the disqualification limit on large poms is still 83mm so you don't need a new large pom ring. Markb, Are you sure? the reason I ask is that in the 2012 31st Edition of the NDS Judging Rules it specifically says on page 30: "Group 7A - Large Pompon Dahlias have blooms usually over 50mm (2in) and not exceeding 75mm (3in) in diameter." I will be seeing a few of the MDS and NDS guys at a talk on the 17th April - so I will ask them for clarification.

Yes, geof. On page 74 of 31st edition of Classified Directory it lists the disqualification sizes as part of the 'Rules for the judging and exhibiting of dahlias in competitive classes'.

I grow gurtla twilight and minley carol, gurtla is hard to overwinter so its best to keep some pot tubers if you can get enough stock.Of the first 24 cuttings I took of it this year I have only 8 (the rest damped off) lets hope I have better luck with the next batch.I won the small ball, mini ball, pom championship class at harrogate year before last using minley carol with blyton softer gleam and marys jomanda.

Cheers bud. I have just had a look on page 74 and you are correct.
That sort of makes a mockery of the "not exceeding 75mm (3in) in diameter." then LOL
I shall point that out to a few people at the next meeting and see what they say.
So glad I only grow Pompons, so many rules to learn.

The most probable reason for the lack of entries is that there are not many Large pompons listed in the directory, only three in fact: Franz Kafka Pu. E.G.C Nuland's Josephine Pu.-Y.Bls E.G.C Riisa R. E.G. I have seen Franz Kafka for sale at lots of places, I found one in Wilkinson for £1.75 - last of the big spenders me but yesterday I saw it online for £1

re poms. Is Frank Newberry still the pom top grower? Have to admit I am a little out of touch with the up to date stuff but I think he was the guy who wrote lots of articles on poms and did the reviews on new varieties.

The pom championships at National Shows have only had two or three entries lately. These from Alan Barlow, Dave Williams and Barry Smith. Frank Newberry still grows poms but not as a speciality I think, growing more 'across the board'. Most of the top quality poms I saw last year were staged by Dave Gillam of the cultivar 'Gurtla Twilight'.

Barry Smith from Tarporley, was the top pom grower in 2011 his vase of Rhonda was best vase in show at the National from his winning exhibit in the Fred Fuller. The Harrogate Show, he won the N.Williams Perpetual Challenge Cup with his poms.

Cheers - I saw those on the day and took lots of photos of them. Dave Gillam won the Best vase of Poms in the show with those too! There were very nice.
