What varieties are favourites that you would recommend. I am especially interested in finding out about the slightly larger pom varieties. Our local show there is a class for 5 pompoms not exceeding 83 mm / 2 inches (The other pompom class is for poms not exceeding 52mm / 3 and a quarter inches).
The bigger 83mm pom class has not had any entries in the last couple of years and I was wondering why that was?

As far as I am aware ALL poms must not exceed 50mm (2 inches) but I will check my judges rule book. Next size up would be min ball.

The 75mm pom is a relatively new class of poms, breeders are now beginning to breed the larger pom, the only 75mm pom in the shows was Franz Kafka but a couple of the new ones have superseded it now.

Yes Tel, I was just now checking it out and it seems I am still living in the past I stand corrected. Anyway it is the wording of the show schedule that matters.

You seem to have your metric and imperial sizes muddle up. The groups for show Pompons according to the "NDS Classified Directory and Judging Rules - 31st Edition" are: Pompons: Have blooms usually not exceeding 50mm (2in) in diameter. Large Pompons: Have blooms that are usually over 50mm (2in) and not exceeding 75mm (3in) in diameter. The most probable reason for the lack of entries is that there are not many Large pompons listed in the directory, only three in fact: Franz Kafka Pu. E.G.C Nuland's Josephine Pu.-Y.Bls E.G.C Riisa R. E.G. I have seen Franz Kafka for sale at lots of places, Also Riisa is quite easy to find. Nuland's Josephine was only added to the NDS directory last year and I am pretty sure it was grown by a member of the MDS so you may have a little difficulty getting hold of this at present. If you are particularly interested in growing Large Poms then I will pass on this information to the relevant person and see if I can get you a plant or two ;-) I grow Pompons, they are the only Dahlias I grow. This will be my 2nd year of growing Dahilas. I hope to increase my stock of Pompons over the next few years so that hopefully one day I can show 20 blooms in the MDS show all of which being Pompons - (well that is the hope anyway) I put this thread up: gardenfriends.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=dahlias&thread=2506&page=1#74382To try and keep all the info for Pompons in one place. Hopefully this would then help anyone looking for any information pertaining specifically to Pompons in the future This year I will be growing: Willo's Voilet Noreen Moorplace Gillwood's Violet Hallmark Little Snowdrop Johann Mrs Black Willow's Surprise Storre's Julie Pink Carol Lakeland Polly Minley Carol Last year the favourites around the shows seemed to be Gutla Twilight, Willo's Voilet and Moorplace. I hope to get a few plants of Gutla Twilight soon, it doesn't tend to over-winter well apparently :-( I am a little biased as I prefer the Poms to any other Dahlia - if I was suggesting any I would put forward, Gutla Twilight, Moorplace and Hallmark all have done well for many years on the show bench. Gutla Twilight: Moorplace: Hallmark: I hope that helps. Sorry for taking so long to post nobody had replied when i started typing my post

I used to be involved with the show schedule for the Society I was in and we used to have several sessions before the wording was adopted.

I have no idea why they had to change the upper size limit on the large poms I will have to be very carefull this year, and scrap the 83mm large pom ring and get a new "small" one @ 75mm.

How much does a set of 'rings' cost?

Tel and Geof, I spent ages looking at the varieties that you mentioned and then I saw Weston Stardust...........
I have to be very careful, I don't want to upset my husband. I've been very lucky that he has been very tolerant so far but 1 dahlia too many could be a risk too dangerous.....

Apparently Gurtla Twilight is pretty amazing. It is not in this country yet. I seem to be very bad at growing poms anyway, so perhaps it is just as well I cannot easily buy that one!

Moonlight, Weston Stardust is not a Pompon it is a Miniature Semi Cactus. I know but I like that one as well I've already got a Weston Spanish dancer tuber on the go (fingers crossed for a cutting soon) and I am getting a couple of Weston Pirate plants. Just saw Weston Stardust on the same page and I thought "Oh No but I like that one as well........." there I was innocently asking a question about pompoms (which has not changed because I am still interested in them). It is just that for me, looking at dahlia sites is dangerous it is like being left alone in a sweet shop when you have been planning a 'midnight feast'......... you don't know what you want to eat / grow first. Well that is me anyway.

steve2t, the disqualification limit on large poms is still 83mm so you don't need a new large pom ring.
