I removed the daffodils from the very large half barrels and want to replace with bedding which I have grown from seed. In one of the barrels is an ants' nest and thousands of eggs or whatever they are. Should I put the new plants in now? They won't like being watered and pampered like the plants will, so will they disappear? They had not damaged the daffs at all, but obviously it was dry.

They are more of a nuisance than a real pest cherry but I would be tempted to dust the nest with ant powder before replanting. It is a perennial problem in the g'house and when they invade a pot I tend to overwater and they soon get the message.

Try putting hot water or vinegar and spray the trails leading away from the hole before you starting to work on seeding. Cause in my perspection, using chemical pesticides might damage your growth of planting in barrels so you could go for natural solutions by spraying vinegar, hot water etc.,

Oh Come on scrumpy, Isn't water chemical? No, I am telling about making steam water(h2o) to pour into ants place. And also i am not telling about chemical vinegar. Edible vinegar where u can used for foods can buy easily at food shop. If you dont have vinegar you go for Lemon juices. Hardly spray into it. Ants or any minute insects never spoils your plants or garden ever.

I get it daitheplant, but if you are really interested, I don't think so. I have weeds though and they are protecting the daffs which are showing now, but they may have to go.

How do you keep going daitheplant? I feel as if it is midnight. It has been a long day today and the prosecco cheer has worn off. I will have to leave you to mind the shop as I am going to read a book and study my seed catalogue. Husband kindly gave me a gift voucher for Suttons.

I had an issue with fire ants once. Sprayed a lot of water (literally) and they were gone
