Congratulations Scrumpy and thank you for going to the trouble to put them on show here. You could almost pick the winners when they were on the garage floor. That is a smart garage by the way.

Well done scrumpy, looks like some good stuff there.Do you prefer vals or hillcrest. What were your blooms like grown on a wing bud. Everything was grown on a wing bud or lower. Can honestly say they have all been the best I've ever grown them. Never grown Hillcrest but if it's as good as Vals then it must be another banker. I've got some Sir Alf growing on a wing bud that may hold out for Southport. I'll take a photo tomorrow. The form on it is immaculate.

Last few pictures now, taken at the end of the show. Heres Bryn Terfel from the side, showing the tree trunk stems How Senzoe looked at the end. That is a good reflection of it's colour. All the giants All the mediums All the smalls and mins and the whole lot Out of all the blooms, only two dropped their petals, one winholme diane and one Loretta, and most looked as good, if not better ( Zoe, Andrea, Susan Gilliott centres developed into brighter colours) at the end than the beginning. In all, 43 vases, 120 blooms, a record for me. Now looking forward to Southport on Wednesday

I know Southport is a big show. How can you better the Shrewsbury results Scrumpy? The dahlias are fantastic. We will have to be patient.

I've never entered Southport before but after being asked many a time to put some in i'll give it a go with my left overs. Unlike Shrewsbury it's a proper dahlia section so there will be more exhibitors and I'll be glad of any prizes. My main aim though will be to show varieties they don't normally see. And I have a secret weapon in the small decs called Barbarry Melody that is looking better than ever, and if I can get 3 spot on I reckon they will beat the best Winholme Dianes shown and will be the talk of the show. The other thing about Southport is that it is easier to exhibit there than Shrewbury because they only have 3 blooms per vase in the smalls and miniatures, but more difficult to win because it's easier to get a 3 than a 5. So i've entered 15 classes. I've entered the championship but no idea what to put in as they ask for 4 vases that can be anything from giants to miniatures. In my mind, I'd love to get 3 Sir Alf in one vase, 3 vals candy, 3 susan gilliott, and either Senzoe or Barbarry melody. Though that could all change

Good thinking Scrumpy. The judge seemed very fair at Shrewsbury and a lot depends on the judge. I think it is a good idea to enter some blooms which are not 'top of the pops', yet they are as near perfect as you can grow.

Careful with that championship class Scrumpy. Unless the Val's Candy is big enough to be a large then both it and the Susan Gilliott would be judged as medium semi cactus and the schedule calls for four distinct classifications.
Good luck at the show.

Good luck at the show. Yes, should be vals or susan gilliott. Ryecroft Rebel will hopefully be my medium dec. Got a litle bit to go on the centres but I think it would be better shown in this class than as a medium on it's own. Maybe Ruskin Andrea as a small semi cactus could go in. I'm sort of aiming for a colour scheme based around Sir Alf, ie, purple/pink/ white blends.

I'll save my final decision until I get up there. I'm hoping Sion will help me with selection for the various classes, or any of the boys from the northern committee, as I haven't a clue what to put where. Just my "biased" preferences Trouble with Shrewsbury is that I fill the classes without taking too much notice of what I'm putting in and what I like doesn't always win,the wife will get the first I've entered 9 blooms in all in the Giants and I could do them with Sir Alf, plus the 3 in the championship...they are a lot better than the ones at Shrewsbury. And those on the wing buds are still looking good and are a bit bigger. And I've got another Bryn Terfel and 2 Fairway Spur .
