As you know, everything I grow comes from wing buds or below. This year some of my Sir Alf were going to be far to early for me so I grew some on wing buds. Here is the result. Front view Side view Stem length Size wise, with another day or two to go, they are at least 11" across ( they don't pass through the large ring) Form wise. Immaculate, far better than normally grown. And a good sized stem on it. So on that basis, I would say that if you know that your giants are going to be too early then definitely go for the wing bud. It may not get to full size, but it will be showable and if judged on form as well as size would probably have a chance of winning.

Them photo's make me feel a whole lot better scrumpy.I have grown on side buds but never wing buds before.I

Some cracking Alf's there Scrumpy. They really look nice. If they hold out till wednesday, seriously thinking of putting 3 in a single vase as one of the 4 vases for the championship at Southport. That'll open a few eyes
