Scrumpy did you save any other seeds or were you only collecting from your Ryecroft Zoe sport?

Sown some seeds from, Marston Lilac, Marston George, Blyton Royal Velvet and Karen Glenn this afternoon. Sown these a week earlier than I would normally, but quite a few more seeds to sow, so staggering the dates of sowing. How many in a batch do you sow?

Do you use put a lid over the seed trays? I was thinking of putting the seeds into small pots, so that I can remove any that start to grow without disturbing any others in the seed tray. Not very good at it, find it stressful. Don't know yet.
I am currently thinking of sowing them 4th of April. Don't know if that is a bit late or not but it would be good to get my tubers going first. (They have been started off but not that long.) I'm not that good at taking cuttings either but any that take are a bonus.

I have placed clingfilm over the seed tray's in the past, in case I forgot about them, especially when I was working, now a days I keep a eye on them. Sowing them on the 4th April will be fine.

Slightly later than I had hoped but I've sown all the seeds that I collected with the exception of my Staleen Condessa where I tried to limit myself to just 30. Dad can have the 70+ that I have left.
Would be nice if some germinated.

Good luck with them moonlight, a lot of mine never showed, I have some more that I could sow, but I will keep them for next year, just in case I do not harvest any this season.

Only ever used to sow seeds from collarettes and Redskin which usually came true. breeding (or rather TRYING to breed) SPs and daffs was more than enough for me to be getting on with.

I was thinking about that today. How do you get new varieties from daffs? n.b. Not planning on trying myself just curious. Heard that you are supposed to dead head the daffs so that it's energy goes back into the bulb rather than make seeds. What's a Redskin?

Dahlia Redskin see here for one supplier www.kingsseeds.com/flower_seeds/Dahlia%20Redskin/P-58908 Most if not all the seed companies will supply. Breeding daffs is a lengthy process and so is describing it but very briefly you choose your varieties and take pollen from one and transfer to the other. it will be years to see the results and that is something I probably don't have. I used to get a bag of mixed seedling bulbs from a breeder which he had not bothered to put into commerce and there were some great flowers there which won me a good few 1st prizes at the shows. Not sure if he still sells them but you can check out Clive Postles by googling. ps I think it is now Bramcote bulbs but not 100% sure

Did you use paintbrushes? No. just cut off and rubbed on to seed parent to transfer polllen. Always trial and error with me. (Mostly error) Like my latest - M. had a bunch of flowers on her birthday last week including some lovely carnations so when they went to the compost bin I pulled off a few slips and stuck them in a pot of compost and vermiculite. They will root or they won't but nothing lost but a little time and if they do root well I gain.

Nothing lost in trying. Totally agree with you.
