Happy New Year everyone. Hope you all have a successful dahlia season. For what ever reason you grow dahlias for.

Happy new year, not a good start to the year for us. We went to check on allotment after high winds only to find our shed and others had been broken into. We have had some damage to the door and the wheelbarrow has been stolen, hope this isn't how the year plans on continuing!
Still on a happier note have been making my list of what I want from the halls catalogue

candyblue sorry to learn about the break-in and the loss of your wheelbarrow. Sickening isn't it? It is good to see the dahlia growers back for the new growing year.

The tubers that Moonlight and DCdahlia sent me, are now in the heated propagator, along with a seedling a small red decorative. The majority of the other tubers are now cleaned up, just a couple of varieties to clean up hopefully tomorrow.

We have tried something new this year for storing our tubers, usually we store them in big boxes full of wood shavings like what I use for the horses bedding. This year as we were very late digging them up I have put the tubers in washing up bowls covered in clean compost.I think this will save us time as we can then put them out on benches ready to start taking cutting from. The bowls are covered in greenhouse insulation and in the greenhouse for now

Does anyone have any idea if its ok to post tuers to the ukraine Posting within the EU is normally Ok providing it is from EU to EU member state. Some countries in europe do however have restrictions on root crops for example potatoes to prevent disease transmition. Some also restrict parcel weight to 2kg for living horticultural goods such as dahlia tubers. I use airsure which is a little more expensive, but reliable. They operate from your post office. www.royalmail.com/personal/sending-mailOutside the EU becomes a problem with inspection certificates especially Canada and the USA. A recent parcel I recieved from the USA cost me $40 for an agricultural inspection certificate,$23.00 normal postage and a further £20.00 customs and excise charge when it arrived in the UK. All this for 12 tubers which proved quite an expensive route, but I couldn't buy them anywhere else. Fortunetly they were nice tubers and apart from the cost I was pleased with what I got. Mark
