Yes I concur with Mark red spider mite looks like the problem in the main If you can control it great but looks too advanced so yes they need to be cremated I am afraid. Hi Ian and Mark just to let you know spider mite finally showing up went with torch tonight and saw the webbing around the leaves as it reflected in the light. Such a shame Sir Alf won't get the chance to flower for me grew it also to tall should have stopped it fully another lesson learned. Is it salvageable for cuttings if I can get rid of the mites ? Best regards and good luck with any shows and judging etc... Coming up Raymond Ps what is still strange is Capsid bugs only attacking white and lilac dahlias. In front garden I have Bergers record. Black touch, crazy love white perfection and Jean Marie. Only Jean Marie and white perfection damaged. In back garden only ferncliff illusion, Jean Marie, lake Michigan , my love and sir Alf have capsid bug damage. I find that strange.

You can take cuttings next year from the tuber even if you can't get rid of the mite. Just make sure all the foliage is removed well before you dig up the tuber.

Hi scrumpy I should have noticed the mites earlier. I will remove all damaged leaves it will be almost stripped bare. Give thorough spraying of water. I think the reason this seems to be my only dahlia with mites is it is covered above with high trees so I have to water by hand so leaves never get a good rinse. Can you suggest a good insecticide or spray for the mites have treated with bug clear. I have a pressure sprayer and was going to use ultimate bug. Any other suggestions would be great. Seen online one used on organic made from hot chilli peppers and also dilute ammonia..don't know if either suitable to dahlias. Just want to salvage it and see what I can get from it next year. I could take cuttings of split the tubor if it survives the winter. Thanks for the reply have a great weekend. Raymond

Well at my local show this morning. I am the only one in the 3 vase Championship. I have 4 entries in the other classes but then there are only two of us in them, the other dahlia exhibitor told me he has terminal cancer and he does not expect he will be around next year, I feel so sad for him.

Life is ******* cruel tel :(I stopped gardening for a number of years as I tried to keep my mother's going when she got terminal cancer of the throat and it broke my spirit for it for many years couldn't face it.
I wish the other exhibitor well and to try and stay strong and fight.

I agree with you Lou, it would have been nice, he did win two classes, in one of them he beat my poms, the other class he won I had no entry.

Hi Raymond, Not sure why you would want to keep a dahlia that has not flowered yet but has a heavy infestation of spider mites ? Normally we keep our best stock whether it produces the strongest plants or the best flowers. This is a gamble, you could end up taking cuttings from a complete pile of c*** and hey presto you have produced not one but more of the same. Where did you get the tuber from ? if it's one of those produced in their zillions and put in a pretty packet then there is good chance it wont be very good quality and the spidermite problem arrived already attached to it. Not all Spidermites die off in the winter they go to ground with adult, 2 nymph stages and the eggs quite capable of living on a dahlia tuber, waiting for next spring and the warmer weather to start all over again. My tubers get sprayed 3-4 times every 3 days once they are dug up, washed, trimmed and then stored in dry peat. This hopefully will eradicate all the egg and nyph stages as well as the adults. They also get sprayed again in the spring twice before I set them up on my prop bench. You are joining Kent dahlia society, they have tuber and plant sales each season where good healthy stock can be purchased for not a lot of money. I know the midlands tuber sale auction some off for about a pound each. Good stock you will find is as cheap if not cheaper than the rubbish hanging in bags at the local garden centre or DIY Shop.
