From Station House: for me: Ryecroft Zoe Moor Place
for my Dad: Winkie Lambrisco Ms Kennedy Marston George Told him I was going to get a Marston George from you but he had already decided to order one.
I ordered mini plants from Halls: Amber Festival, Hillcrest Hannah, Edwin’s Sunset and Nulands Josephine.
I made a mistake by ordering Nulands Josephine because Dad has ordered the tuber. I've sent them an email asking them if I could do a straight swap with a mini plant of same value. If they do let me swap then great and if they don't more fool me. Dad had given me a list of what he had ordered.
Dad's tubers from Halls arrived today:
Susan Gilliott, Lemon Elegans, Megan Dean, Lismore Moonlight, Nulands Josephine

I was determined not to grow decs but then I was tempted and couldn't resist. The Ryecroft Amber and the Hillcrest Hannah are going to belong to the girls and will be their responsible for care and maintenance. If they do look after them properly then they can enter them in the shows. (If there any blooms ready.) We picked those because they were different than the dahlias that I grow. Both decs but different sizes so in theory they won't have to compete against each other.
Dad isn't really into growing decs any more but when he was young he won at the National with some purple ones (don't what variety). It was his first National. I was hoping that he would go for the Brenda T.
Unfortunately I was seduced by the offer of a Brenda T, so I mucked the theory up. I don't think that I've got that level of drive and determination to win but it is difficult to resist one that does so well in the shows and I do secretly want to achieve something.
All I will say is I'm my Father's daughter. Bring it on, let's let the dahlias do the talking...

Last 2 not yet ordered...
Majestic Athalie
and
Eastwood Star
Dad is going to make an order there, he wouldn't now order those two for himself after last time on principle. Fair enough his choice but not mine. So I am hoping that this time, they send what they are selling. Ultimately, if you stop growing varieties, then they are lost forever and I'm not going to let these 2 go without a fight.
Worked with Downham Royal which was still going as a cut flower but superseded by modern exhibition varieties in shows, so proud as punch when I beat the Jomandas and other competitors in non novice classes. Old timers don't mean no good.
Good dahlias are good dahlias no matter how old a variety and that's the same with all plants.

Have you managed to find Eastwood Star then ? Dad ordered it before but I don't think he ordered Majestic Athalie, they have some sort of data base system where they refer to each variety by a number. What Dad ordered wasn't what he had delivered. The code and the name isn't /wasn't a match/ed.
That's what happens when your write a number on the label rather than a variety name.

Frustratingly the decision was made to stop having a County dahlia society website and unfortunately, I have received no correspondence from them, so I can't say with 100% knowledge that I am correct for this year but judging on my notes and photos of last year, these are the classes for the Intermediate Cup. There are also a mini show either side of the main show where you can exhibit any number of entries for each class. Vases of 1 and 3 dahlias for the various sizes / types.
Intermediate Championship Class: 2 vases of 3 blooms.
Intermediate Classes: x3 vase of large /giant x3 medium x3 small x3 miniature x3 pom x3 collerette
1 entry per class
Last years show was the day after that massive rain storm, growers that don't have covers suffered big time. Consequently there was a lot less entries across the whole show itself. Even so, there were no entries in the pom class, 1 vase of medium, 2 vases of small, 2 vases of miniature and 2 vases of collerette.
The other intermediate class is a single vase of large / giant.
The dominant variety was Kenora Valentine which won the Intermediate Championship class itself, the x3 large / giant and single bloom of large / giant. The colour is absolutely stunning but not an option for me. So it is going to have to be, fingers crossed for Trooper Dan because there is no way I can get 3 good Sir Alfs on a single plant.
As I've already said, the heavy rain ruined a lot of plants, so I am sure that there would be a lot more entries but I am surprised at the poms with no entries. Maybe the intermediate growers like the challenge of perfect timing of a giant.
Who knows, I am hoping that I will manage an entry in the pom and miniature classes and maybe even the small. Realistically I don't think I can grow and show mediums. I think that they are too big for me but it would be wonderful to win with an Eastwood Moonlight. The giants that I'm growing are really for the rest of the family because they are in awe of the size.
Me, I'm happy with my Downham Royals and my Pirate. The Westons make me smile.

I think it is a good thing that I haven't joined the n.d.s.
