Boost of colour soon I hope

For those of you who don't go on the allotment part of the forum and didn't see my back yard thread... you may recognise me as a newbie as I only registered to your site within the past couple of days I seem to be the only person on the forum at the moment, which is strangely eerie lol. I just hit a quiet spell in work and thought I'd check out the forum with my afternoon cuppa in hand and thought I would start a new thread about my front 'garden' which I am doing my best to bring a bit of colour to. Basically it's fairly small and it's concrete and stones so container growing is the only way for me. There is also a possibility of moving house in a few years’ time so containers can be easier brought with us

I have window boxes at the front of the house with tulips (rockery, black queen of the night, triumph and double early), anemone (Mr Fokker, Caen and Sylphide) specie crocus and russian snowdrops as well as a cordyline sunset at each window edge in the boxes.

I have small pots of Glory of the Snow, daffodils, 3 roses, forest flame, 3 laurels and chrysanths.

I have 2 half barrel planters, one either side of the front door, begonia, geranium, hydrangea, heathers, primrose, carex evergold and variegated ivy mainly in those.

I also have pots with bulbs currently hopefully growing in them: freesia, ixia corn lillies, pink and white Persian buttercups as well as orchid peacocks.

As I’ve such a small space, I clearly have a very small amount of everything. But I will try and upload photos here soon of them, if possible. I really am new to all this gardening malarkey but I love a challenge and am hoping for lovely colour soon.

Any hints and tips are well appreciated. Thanks for reading

Hi KC ... it's a good idea to have pots and tubs so that you can easily take them with you if you move. It would be sad to leave your plants behind.

I like your Anemone. I have some coming up but slugs have eaten some of the buds  Very annoying ...

I also have a small front garden but I've planted things in it, and I'm looking for more to put there too

I hope you will show some more photos of your front garden. I haven't seen the allotment thread. I haven't got one.

I wouldn't call what I have an allotment, I only started the thread there as it seemed to be the only place to put something about fruit and veg it's a lot of pots in my back yard but so far so good.

Thanks Hywel, I love the Anemone, they are very pretty. I have to spend some time outside tonight after work to rearrange a few things and move some more pretty flowers in bloom into my boxes. Everything needs a good watering too.

What kind of things have you planted in your front garden? We've no grass, just stones so again pots it is for me lol

I have 4 pots in the front garden, with what I call permanent planting, a Acer, a miniature Lilac, a blueberry and a small flowering cherry tree that the OH had bought for mothers day a couple of years ago.

Your permanent planting sounds lovely Tel. Your cherry tree must be an absolute stunner, I love them. I'm hinting at OH already for when we move (quite a while a way yet...to his homeplace)

My front garden is very small. I've put some little shrubs there, with a few herbaceous plants in between them. Last summer I used bedding begonias and annuals to fill it out a bit. I'm going to do the same this year. The shrubs are rather small yet

I like plants in pots though. You can move them around, to have a change and you can take them away when they've finished flowering.

I would say that is the planting dimensions.

Blimey it's been ages since I last posted on this thread! I have bought around 100 medium geranium plugs for the front garden this year, I absolutely love them! As well as 5 fuchsia and 10 penstemon red riding hoods. Who comes up with the plant names lol. We aim to redesign the front garden this year, round spring time, replace hedge with fence and build low(ish) raised beds surrounding the fence for lots of pretty things I'd also like something decorative for the wall adjacent to our front door, some sort of wall art perhaps peeking through something growing tall at our door. Unsure. Any suggestions?
