I have a garden pink in a pot called Alan Titchmarsh. When is the best time of year to take cuttings from it ?

I have two pots of Pinks growing away fine and I got the small cuttings 3 or 4 weeks ago. Sometimes there is no choice in availability of cuttings. Of course, if you own the mother plant, take it later. I thought unflowered cuttings were best daitheplant.

They are Cherry, but flowered stems will do as well, just remove the flower so they don`t set seed.

Back in march my wife had a birthday bunch of flowers incl some carnations. When it was time to send them to the compost heap I thought I'd try some cuttings so took 3, two of which I just potted on today. No idea what to do with them as never having grown before but suspect that as florists' flowers they will not be hardy outdoors. Still I will have a go at overwintering them in the g'house and see what happens. Only dianthus I have grown previously have been sweet william and the Alpine dianthus on the rockery. as they say, 'nothing ventured....'

Sweetpea, your carnations should do fine in the garden. What I would do, is grow them on in the greenhouse, then next spring, harden them off before planting out late spring/early summer.

I took some cuttings last autumn from a bunch the OH had bought, left them in the green house over winter, forgot to separate them, now some are in bud.

Actually sweetpea, you could take another cutting off the tall one.

Its odd isn't it. Both taken at the same time and same situation and one gallops off
