I have quite a few delphiniums in my borders and this morning noticed that a couple of the older ones are now quite woody in the centres. They have new shoots about 2" long coming from the outsides of the woody centres . Can I use these shoots for cuttings, and if so do I take them in the same way Tel has shown for the dahlia cuttings or do they need some root on? Any advice would be appreciated

Hi peony,
This is the best time of year to take delphinium basal cuttings. You don't need to get any huge root on the cutting, just take the cuttings when about 2 inch high - push you knife under the soil level and take the cutting as close to where it emerges from the main root system as possible. Pot up and somewhere warm and they will romp away.
Or now is the perfect time to split delphiniums. Hope that helps.

Bists, thank you for explaining so clearly. As I have two delphiniums with woody centres I think I'll try both your suggested methods. Thanks again

Thanks from me too Bists. Would this method suit Aconitum carmichaelii too?

I tend to lift them and split the clumps, removing the dead bits and replanting. I do the same with Aconitum too. Though cuttings are possible by the same method.

I prefer to split the Aconitum as well.
Just a pointer with the delphiniums....if you want to prolong the flowering season, pinch out the tops of half of the new shoots when they are about 8-12inch high. These shoot will then flower about 4(ish) weeks later then the shoots that you don't pinch out.
This gives you a much longer flowering season......you can try using the pinched out tips as cuttings...nothing to lose!!!

Didn't know about that Bists, I'll try that too, I do love delphiniums, so anything that makes them last longer gets my vote ;D
