Even though the decision to increase the size of a regular pom dahlia by a couple of mm is still rather controversial here, my understanding is that the main reason for increasing the size was to enable pom growers to exhibit poms that when that tiny bit large make better more attractive blooms.
(Or I have got that wrong?)
Which poms are the main ones that this applies to?
Round here the usual winner is Gurtla Twilight or sometimes Willo's Violet.
I do like Moor Place and Lismore Moonlight which I am planning on growing this year. I'm dropping Tisa because it isn't good enough (even though I love the colour) and I am going to try Pop Willo and Winkie Lambrisco.
I'm interested in finding out the successful varieties and in particular which will benefit the most from the changes, as they used to be a tad too close to the ring?

I understand a lot of poms go over sized unless they are stopped two or three times. The change to ring size will be a big help to those pom growers.

Hi Moonlight Tel is right but some of the pom growers feel grown to their full potential some are better grown to the limit eg Rhonda, Noreen, Hallmark. Gurtla, Moor place (but tends to be a little flat). The Winkie Lambrusco you have is quite big so will need to be lightly disbudded and may be better on a side bud. Pop Willlo lightly disbud again side bud is fine. Ian

btw, ian and Tel, my 30 pompons are all nicely potted on into 3" pots and looking happy in my conservatory. It faces north, so they are only getting late afternoon sun

Thank you for your replies and advice. I've collected some pom seed and some large pom seed. I think it will be very interesting what will come up and whether there will be anything worth keeping.
