This is in my Mum-in-law's new garden, and we're not sure what it is. She gave it a massive haircut and it survived... I wondered if it was a yellow magnolia, but i've never seen one before? Anyway the flowers aren't really right?

I`m wondering if it`s a deciduous Azalea. Is it scented?

It certainly looks like a deciduous Azalea. Probably Rhododendron luteum (Azalea now just relegated to common name for certain species of Rhododendron).

I don't know if it's scented as I took the photo through the conservatory windows - it was a bit awkward to get at from where we were.
Thanks, I will look those up some more.

There might be other treasures in your mother-in-law's new garden Bess. She should leave this azalea alone for next year at least as it does not grow too fast and she will see the new buds coming when it has stopped flowering. I never cut my orange one as it has a finite height. There is a pic on 'flowers for May'.
