Can anyone give me any advice on why a lot of my dahlia blooms have brown tips,it seems to start as they are in tight bud and as the bud opens it distorts the flower head? I have sprayed them with a insecticide?

It is more than likely to be thrip the little so and so's get into the bud and as they open the spear to be brown, it shows up most on yellows and whites. They are easy to get rid of just use a good insecticide ultimate bug or pravado should sort. I use Decis but doubt if you will get the one. When spraying spray the plants and also behind the unopened buds. I also use deris power there are other powders available (ant powder has the same chemical I its) to puff behind the buds this will help prevent aphids getting in the bud.

The other reason may be after looking at your post again if you have sprayed dahlia buds when the flowers have the petals 'flicking' then it may be the spray that has caused the problem.
If it does turn out to be Thrip you can usually be able to see a very tiny only 1mm long insect the move quite quickly around the bloom, if you cannot see them with the naked eye then use a magnifying glass to see them these little sods make an awful mess of your blooms they sh!? All over and is this that makes the blooms brown as well as them feeding.
Have a look
Thrip can also affect the tips of cactus type Dahlias and developing petals in the bud so spraying early for them is a must.

Yes for me the last picture looks like thrip or capsid bug damage if you look closely I think that is a capsid bug on the bud. Now capsid bugs bite the plant leaves or buds and their saliva has an enzyme I it the stops the cells growing as they should around where they have bitten. If you look at the last picture then you will see there is at least eight petals that have been affected also there are brown marks which suggests to me Thrip is also present.

Ian, you have eyes like a toilet dwelling rodent! I had capsids in the front garden the other year, I don't want to micturate on your french fries...but when the damage showed up.... it was too late to rectify the problem as nearly all the buds were affected. The plants were also damaged before the budding stage..... Doesn't do them any favours either.. The blighters were within the hedge....so the following year, that was included in the spraying routine......A valuable lesson learnt by me, was.......don't forget to spray surrounding areas likely to harbour bugs! (soon as plants are planted...and before as well!!) Hope you can rectify the problem somewhat!!!!
