I was thinning out the chillies and found Cane Beetles which look like giant vine weevils. I will get a similar spray from Bunnings to the one we would use for vine weevil and despatch them. Monstrous things which eat the roots.

I looked them up Cherry & they sound horrible especially the bit about 'they can smell like rotting pork'! I found some info. which said they can be treated with products called 'Confidor Guard', 'Senator' & 'Shield' but they may be for professional use as it was a site about sugar cane production.

Good going there Sue. It appears that these things grow into horrible grubs where people hold up a hand and curl their finger and thumb, so that they don't meet. Big things in other words. Jeremy was introduced to one when the Hungarian Vizsla brought one in and dropped in his lap like a gift. Cane toads, disgusting pests, were brought to Queensland to get rid of the Cane Beetles, but they don't eat them. Ibis eat them and it seems that this is what they are looking for when they are seen pecking the ground with their curved beaks. I got the granules to treat the pot of chillies and I see Jeremy has some galangal and ginger in there also.

My word they are big beasties! Imagine that crawling over you in the middle of the night!! Ilike the sound galangal, it seems to be getting used more over here now.

This stuff works and there are two dead cane beetles on top of the pot now. They are disgusting. I nearly kicked a cane toad when out walking with the dogs tonight. Uugh!

Wow, those beetles sound pretty gross! I had a similar issue with vine weevils last year, and the Bunnings spray worked wonders for me. Just make sure you follow the instructions carefully—those things can be a real pain to get rid of.
