Hi I've bought some shaped garden sleepers similar to those in this picture and would like some advice on creating a retaining wall. The wall will be approximately 4m long and will be 3 sleepers high and will be sitting on soil. Can anyone advise; 1) Is it ok to sit the sleepers directly on soil or should some sort of protective sheeting be used? 2) What is the best way to fix the sleepers in position? Do I need to look at cementing them in or perhaps cementing a few posts in place and then fastening the sleepers to those or is there another way of doing this? Thanks for any replies.

Hi kibbster & welcome to the forum. I've only ever built a small wooden veg. bed on soil by knocking 4 corner posts into the soil & then screwing the planks to them but it lasted for years, I think if the sleepers are treated wood they would be fine straight on the soil but you could dig a small channel & fill it with gravel or hardcore & build the wall on top of that if you have a tendency to wet soil. Good luck with the project, we'd love to see photos!

Hi Sue. Thanks for the advice. Think I'll go with your advice and knock a few posts in and fasten the sleepers to them. The sleepers are pressure treated but digging a small channel is a good idea.
Thanks again 😀
