Yes it's been a really good year for less common garden species here too. I've just seen a Holly Blue but we've also had Orange Tip, Brimstone, Comma, Meadow Brown, Gatekeeper, Speckled Wood and my most favouritest of all - Small Copper.

Literally all we’ve had this summer is cabbage whites - loads of them. Why the absence of others?!

We've had lots of whites here as well, I did see a few peacocks, commas etc. around in mid July but hardly any since & then the first Red Admiral yesterday but it left before I could get a photo. I think it must be to do with the weather & plants flowering at slightly different times than normal, a combination of the 'Beast from the East' followed by the boiling heat probably killed off caterpillars etc. I think the whites are just so numerous anyway that there are always lots around but we're just noticing them more because of the lack of the more colourful ones?

Thinking about caterpillars changing in to chrysalis and then changing again gives me butterflies

The butterflies have started reappearing here now the sun is out, there had been a distinct shortage of them until the last week or two but I've seen peacock, red admiral. small tortoiseshell, comma, small white, large white, speckled wood, gatekeeper, small blue (poss. Holly blue), silver y moth, orange underwing moths & even a hummingbird hawkmoth again (didn't get a pic. though). The Big Butterfly Count is on:- Butterfly count so at least I have some to report now. Comma Peacock Speckled wood

A friend who lives near King’s Lynn complained that she has had NO butterflies on her buddleia this year, although she has had loads in previous years.

A couple of the small blue butterflies were fluttering around the garden yesterday & one of them stopped on the wisteria long enough for me to get a couple of photos & I.D. it - a female Holly Blue I think.
