Managed to get my camera out for these two pretty ones. Comma newly emerged so pretty and pristine. One of 3 small tortoise shells that were flitting about today. The brimstone didnt stay long enough for photos.

Everything is coming out now that the sun's appeared, we've had a few huge queen bumblebees & yesterday a peacock butterfly but I wasn't quick enough to get a photo of it!

I practically tripped over a small Tortoiseshell yesterday! It flew up from under my feet & I was caught by surprise!

From my notes we had them about the same time last year, they are some of the earliest flies and some have two broods a year.

Managed to get a photo of 2 small tortoiseshell butterflies who have been fluttering around the garden together for a couple of days when they settled on the gravel path to sunbathe for a while!

I have only seen 2 butterflies, but quite a few whites. It is a windy spot here and this may make a difference. They cover the Buddleias at White House Farm.

I went up to my son's house yesterday to water his plants & see to his daughter's hamster. Tey have gone away for a few day's holiday. As it's a good 20 minute walk I kept my eyes ope for butterflies; I only saw 3, 2 Cabbage Whites & an unidentified very small one. I grow a few Nasturtiums on the balcony most years & they are normally covered in caterpillars, not this year! I haven't seen a single Cabbage White flitting around the balcony! For that matter I've hardly seen any butterflies whatsoever this year! With bees it's practically the same; very few on the balcony & very few in general! The most I've seen this year was a month or so ago when I went to my son's house & we saw lots of bees in the Clover in his "lawn".
There is a flowerbed in the grounds of our block of flats where the council gardeners planted some Veronicas a few years ago. These are normally covered in bees but I've only seen a few on them this year. Seems like it's a bad year for insects in general.
I a few weeks time our son & family are going on holiday for a week & I will be going up to water his plants while they are away. He has a Buddleia at the bottom of the garden. Other years I've seen butterflies & bees on it & I hope to see some again this year when I go up there.
