I had the gardener in today to dig all the weeds out in the borders he told me to buy a good weed killer as they will still come up but I have a few roses and a camellia and a phillidelphus in this border which I dont want to lose have anyone got any ideas what plants I can use to cover to soil as its so bare Ive just watched the chelsea show on tv as I recorded so many and there gardens are beautiful

joysie21, I don't like using weedkillers at all & I agree that if you cover the bare soil then you'll get less weeds coming up but you would still have to pull the odd one or two out. You could plant things like lavender & salvias which would go well with your roses or perennial geraniums or alchemilla mollis which spread & help to smother weeds. Other than that you could cover a lot of the bare soil with a weed suppressant membrane (usually comes on a roll or in a pack as black plastic or material with very fine holes in it to allow water through) & put fine chipped bark over that. This would stop a lot of the weeds coming up & if you wanted to plant anything else in the border you can just cut a hole in the membrane & plant into that.
