These have popped up between my compost bin and chicken house, in a shady bit. I noticed them when I put the hedgehog food out, as it's where they particularly like to poke around. They're fairly large compared with the usual little toadstools I get around the old wooden sleepers in this area. Anyone here know what they are? It doesn't really worry me if they're poisonous or not - I'm not going to eat them, and I haven't got any kids/animals likely to either! Just interested, because I think they look kind of cool.

They look like 'earthball' fungi Bess which I think are classed as poisonous but you wouldn't want to eat them anyway as they're black in the middle.

The clump has gone all black and revolting looking now actually - been quite interesting to see it change though! I'll google Earthball fungis and see what I can find, ta SueA

Yes and I have the second generation now - the first lot turned black and melted, and now two/three weeks later I have the next round. Fascinating.
