I forgot to mention.....
My new Cottage comes complete with a pond !!!!!
I have NO idea what to do with it !
Apparantly, it used to have fish. But then it had a couple of Herons, and they ate all the fish !!

Depends on dimensions of pond eg length, width, depth and what you wish to use it for. Ornamental or wildlife.

I would go for a wildlife pond but then I would wouldn't I as that's the only kind I ever have. If you put a few plants in - marginals, oxygenators etc., the wildlife will come & you get frogs which will help keep down the slug & snail population & butterflies & bees which will pollinate your other plants/crops.

I agree wholeheartedly with SueA about this. Prettier and easier to look after yet still needing management so it keeps you busy.

That does sound very deep Roofy, I would expect something that size to be only a couple of foot deep. Did they originally dig it as a grave or were they aiming for a well?! If it doesn't have a sloping end I'd put something like a tree branch/plank etc. in so that anything which falls in can climb out, you could lose hedgehogs, cats, anything in something that deep if they can't climb out!

Stick a cane or suchlike down to bottom of pond and measure where the wet part is to see how deep it is. I only asked dimensions as you may need to net it to prevent leaves falling in and you will need to access the surface from the sides to remove floating stuff. Depth can also influence what plants you use. is it a pond with a butyl liner or concrete?

thanks for all the suggestions folks. I have no idea how deep it is. It only LOOKS about a foot deep, with some sort of underwater plants. I will take photographs in due course. I SUSPECT it is concrete, but at this stage it is only a guess
